Need tp password protect wp-admin

I need a code to password protect wp-admin. Due to the default wordpress redirection codes set in the .htaccess (doc root of the domain), the code to password protect in .htaccess(within wp-admin) is not working.

Also, wp-admin redirects to : https://<domain>/wp-login.php?redirect_to=http%3A%2F%2F<domain>%2Fwp-admin%2F&reauth=1 , guess that y password protection is not working.. tried the general codes given in all wordpress links to password protect wp-admin and wp-login.php

Please help!!!!!
