need tutorial – listing pages

Hi, I’m new to WordPress.

Could you direct me to a tutorial/forum discussion about listing pages in a nested unordered list, where only subpages of the current top level page are visible (I’m doing a horizontal menu for main pages and a nested vertical for sub). I’m a web desing newbie, building my first site for a client. Initially I built it with Textpattern where there was nothing to learn. However the client was scared of the textpattern interface so I decided to swtich to WordPress. I find it really complicated, especially the way docutmenation is organized! (no usability).

I will appreciate if you share your experience with crating very static sites. The one I’m building is will have only the laterst few posts on the home page, without any arhives or full article pages….
