I have just over 3,000 comments on one particular page and for the last few weeks the nesting of these comments has disappeared. Now all new comments appear one after the other.

The only explanation I have been able to figure out is that the CSS class “depth-2”, “depth-3” have all disappeared and all new comments are set to “depth-1” no matter where they should be nested.

Any idea how this bug came about? Any idea how I can fix it?

(I have nested comments activated to 5 levels)

    The webpage is: https://www.whyihatedogs.com/top-10-reasons-why-i-hate-dogs/

I think I’ve figured it out: Orphaned comments.

I had deleted several parent comments written by a troll, and all the comments written in reply were orphaned. Later, people wrote replies to the orphaned comments but they weren’t nested properly because there was no parent.

    What a mess.

I deleted the last 200 comments and the nesting has come back.
