network admin and plugins vanish

  • Network site with multi sites. The network admin has vanished and so have nearly all the plugins (akismet is there)
    I cannot upload or check any plugins as the network setting is missing.
    File listing via cpanel shows the plugins exist.
    Had a look at wp-config.php and the network is active.
