Change [Enter part of a blog/site name] to [Enter part of a blog/site name]*

Make sure you search with the asterisk.

Cause it works better ?? Among other reasons.

becasue the old way didn’t scale.

@ipstenu – It has been working fine since WPMU.

@andrea_r – It was scaling just fine for us.

@bigsite – It doesn’t scale, or work well, when you get up to a few hundred sites. Or thousand. And yes, people ARE using MultiSite for thousands of sites.

This change was made to support everyone. It annoys you, and I understand that, but it still works for you. And me. And WordPress.com. And Andrea ??

@ipstenu – We are already running a couple hundred sites in a single install with no problem here. This should be a configuration option.

Not REALLY supportable in the long run. It still works, just use the asterisk. Sorry you don’t like that, but it’s not changing back. This is better code. This code will grow to thousands without issues, on smaller servers. Yay!

While it does work, I wouldn’t exactly say like a charm. Here’s what I’ve discovered when searching users from /wp-admin/network/users.php …

Searching for sammy* found users: sammy, sammy177, Sammysmama, and sammysmom. User fightingforsammy was NOT included in the search results.

BUT …

When searching for fighting* user fightingforsammy WAS found.

Of course this is just an example of a pattern that I confirmed with a search for newtest* that found user newtestuser but did NOT return user anothernewtestuser, and a search for another* that DID find anothernewtestuser.

So apparently, the asterisk search feature only works if you know what the username begins with. [sigh]

Now. I will say that no, you CANNOT search for *sammy or *sammy* (which is what you want to find [anything]sammy[anything]) just yet, but IIRC, Nacin said that was on the docket.

Then can you explain why a search from site admin (/wp-admin/users.php) for sammy* finds fightingforsammy? The behavior I described above only seems to occur from the network admin user search. :-/ Shouldn’t they both function the same way?

Because the users search code is separate from the sites. Apples and oranges. ??

If, on /wp-admin/users.php, you search for whatever you will find [whatever]foobar[whatever] – This is still using the ‘normal’ search.

On /wp-admin/network/users.php, however, you use the ‘network’ search. Same as you use for sites.php ?? That’s all.
