I have been using the widget since forever.
Listed a number of galleries to randomly display 5 images from.
Since a recent update of NextGen the random option doesn’t work properly anymore.

It seldom displays 5 images. It displays anywhere between 0 and 5 images.
When I change the option from random -> recently added, it does display 5 images.
But they are always the same, the don’t rotate.

I tried to use 1 gallery as well instead of the 15 I have configured in the widget.

    Options used in the Widget:
    Show 5 thumbnails
    random
    Width x Height 180×120
    Select: Only which are listed
    GalleryID: 5,6,7,8,10,11,15,18,19,20,23,49,50,87,88,167,173,174,183,182,185,216,233,234,235,236,237,238,239,241

I tried to disable other plugins to see if that had any effect, it didn’t.
All other NextGen functions are working properly.
Used different systems and browsers, all the same results.

    Hi!

Indeed this one seems to be a duplicated thread: https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/new-update-kills-random-picture-widget/#post-10820667. I am going to mark this forum thread as resolved to close it. Let’s focus our conversation on that other thread please.

Well, the moderator removed my post from that topic. And stated that I need my own topic.
So please provide me with support either here or in the other topic and sort things out with the moderators. My issue is not yet resolved and anything I can do to assist to get it fixed, please let me know!

@imagely Don’t pile on topics. That’s not how these forums work as I explained in the other topic.

If that’s a problem please feel free to direct users to your own site for support.

    Hi @derice!

We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and our late response.
We have been checking this issue with that original forum thread, and we found that it’s an existing issue with a particular server configuration.

Can you please let us know what hosting provider are you currently using and can you please reach their support to ask them if they have enabled ORDER BY RAND() in SQL?

    Hello Gaby,

My hosting provider supports ORDER BY RAND() in SQL. It’s also active.
Tested this myself in a SQL query:

    SELECT
    *
    FROM
    wp_options
    ORDER BY RAND()
    LIMIT 1;

It returns a different value each time.

Likewise, my hosting provider supports RAND() and ORDER BY RAND() and I tested it manually. For those who don’t know, RAND() adds a random number field to an SQL query output, and ORDER BY RAND() therefore sorts the query output randomly.

There are now numerous reports of this same issue, and they need to be treated seriously, and not referred back for unlikely local hosting configurations.

@imagely, when are you going to help me (and others!) with this?

Hey all – CEO at Imagely/NextGEN Gallery here. I want to confirm that the issue with random galleries and especially random widgets is high priority. I agree there are enough reports, this warrants immediate attention.

Unfortunately, the release of Gutenberg is imminent. Gutenberg is a massive change that will affect every single WP and NGG user. We’ve got most of our team doing double time to ensure everything is smooth for NextGEN users when Gutenberg comes out. There are a lot of scenarios to cover and test.

The moment we’re confident Gutenberg is wrapped up – should be within a day or two – looking into random galleries is one of top priorities.

Thanks for your reaction @edanzer. I look forward to the solution. Glad to read it’s on the to-do list once all preperations are done for Gutenberg. Also very nice if that works nicely with NextGen. ??

I’ve updated the plugin to V3.1.1 today. But still the issue remains.
Two weeks have passed since @edanzer his promise to look into this on priorirty. No fix just yet. What’s the roadmap / timeline for this?

    Hi @derice

Our developers already fixed this problem but it’s yet to be included in our stable version. We have to focus our effort on Gutenberg and WordPress 5.0 release.

I hope that makes sense, I promise that we are doing our best.

Hi, as the developers already fixed the issue, why hasn’t it been included in the 3.1.3 or 3.1.4 releases? Those are stable…

We were able to find that NextGen Gallery 3.1.6 fixed this issue. I am going to mark this thread as resolved to close it.
