• Ever hear of the phrase if it aint’ broke don’t fix it? I see there have been other posts started, and closed on this, but I have to comment. All these benefits you tout in the description, better legibility and so forth, are just not true! It’s very hard to see white on black type, there is nothing wrong with gray gradients, they type face is not user friendly or easy to read, it’s just all bad. Is there a way to go back? I have two WP sites open and had to upgrade one, the other I will not until I am absolutely forced to. I have both open side by side and the old one is much more readable. Why? Why? Why?

Ive followed your advice and either the plug-in–a third party product–clashes with something else, its unintelligible to use, it just adds to plug-in bloat, or becomes obsolete down the track.

Correct. The WP Classic Admin plugin clashes with my Calendar plugin. The developer of the plugin is looking into the problem and I await to be told I need to get rid of my calendar plugin, which is one of the main purposes of the website. What’s the point of having it if it can’t do what it’s supposed to?

    For those interested

    @dflynn: You asked:

at least allow us the access to go back on an individual basis.

I replied with the url of a plugin that claims to do just that. Please do not post derogatory comments about other posters based upon your interpreted view of their responses.

Esmi: If I may, what derogatory comments about other posters?

the way you respond to issues raised, just come across as blowing them off.

    Hey Esmi,

Well if I may then add:

    1) I actually tried to word that carefully. It *seems* to me that you blow me off when you, say for example, simply, post a link. It has no relationship to my complaint or my abilities or capabilities. Suppose I find fiddling with plug-ins to be a frustrating exercise for a whole bunch of reasons. And, it does not deal with the root of my concern-complaint that WordPress makes cosmetic changes and leaves its users scrambling to find a solution. Telling a user to go get a plug-in is exactly that, in my mind.

    2) That comment is actually not derogatory. I dont want to get pedantic on a word meaning.

    3) No personal derogation was intended, none at all. If you feel you were personally derogated, please that was not intended at all.

As an aside, and as a more general comment for what it is worth, I often get the *impression* from the “helpers” in this forum that they think we all have expertise in code. We dont. For a lot of us, its so frustrating to be confronted with some advice to change the code here or there, or download this but which also requires a certain technical expertise. A lot of us are just point and click, me included. That’s why I said above that a lot of these plug-ins I find unintelligible.

All I (or any other forum user) can do is provide links to other options that may (or may not) help. I cannot “know” whether someone is comfortable or not using plugins – even though many plugins are about as “point & click” as it gets. All I can do is offer another option. And the keyword there is “offer”. Not “tell”.

No one who has responded to this thread is directly related to any core WordPress development, so perhaps you are taking your frustrations out on the wrong people?

The WP Classic Admin plugin clashes with my Calendar plugin.

You need to take this up with the developers of both plugins.

You need to take this up with the developers of both plugins.

That is exactly the problem that DFlynn is describing in their previous post. WP makes a cosmetic and functional change, there are complaints about it, advice is given to ‘try this plugin’, it doesn’t work – OH WELL! Too bad. I have ‘taken it up’ and there is no further investigation being done. I will be sure to tell you if I’m ever given a solution beyond ‘get rid of your other plugin so ours can work’. So I’m left with a choice of my website either looking good and usable, or having a function I need. Not both. In other words – the perfect illustration of why providing a link to a plugin is not a solution and seems like being ‘blown off’.

To quote one of my colleagues earlier:

If you want to focus and encourage others to just complain about the 3.8 admin GUI then you do not need my help. To be fair you didn’t ask for my participation and I’m sure I can find something else to do today.

I think part of the problem is most of the people here that are trying to help are also one the development team and just too close to the new interface to listen to what the problems are.

Suppose that the “classic admin” plugin wasn’t available what would be there answer? It would be the same as it was before the plugin was made. Too Bad, this is what we’ve created your going to have to deal with it. Now the fall back position is “use the classic admin plugin” One can clearly see that they don’t want to change it, they want us to go away.

I’ve read through a ton of the developer threads an not one of them mentions in any of them that we may need to give users the option to go back.

If I wanted a 4 color interface I’d dig out my Apple IIe from of the closet. It uses the same blue, orange, white and black color scheme. I’d bet many of the development team are young people and mobile users, they simply made an interface for themselves. But it’s not a user friendly interface at all. It kills Woo Commerce one of the largest e commerce plugins for WP, sales graphs and data are made totally unreadable because of the idiotic column forcing.

locking the admin to 4 colors also changes plugins data displays. Some data is totally missing because they colors they would normally use are not available. Roll overs don’t display properly either. I could go on.

The real solution would be a simple one. in 3.9 create the ability to choose your admin style. Not a plugin but an actual classic admin panel that has the proper functionality.

I think the reason some of the moderators are taking our criticism so personally is they helped create this beast. They say we should get involved but if everyone on the build team are simply a bunch of [Derogatory comments moderated], and nothing will get change because I or whoever would be simply out voted. That’s why the complaints are here. If we as the end user don’t feel we are being heard or that we are important then the anger and frustration starts showing up in the posts.

The reason I know they have no concern with what we are asking for is look in the UI and Support Threads there is NO mention of any issue here. That is why we feel we are being blown off.

No more than any other user who beta tested 3.8.

    Maybe that’s the problem.

I can’t believe the amount of negative response on 3.8. I absolutely love the new UI. You probably all use iPhones and are used to only nominal modifications and new marketing tactics through each generation.

Updates are actually supposed to bring real change to the table. Keep in mind WordPress is a free platform, of which nothing else compares. If you don’t believe me, try finding a replacement.

Wahh wahh they changed my colors its so hard to use now. Go choke on your iPhone charger you ingrates.

It seems to me the WordPress team couldn’t care less what it’s users want, which should be their #1 priority. I see so many posts with pushy mods unhappy with responses from users, sometimes shutting down threads/posts because they just don’t like what they are reading. You have a product you want the masses/customers paying(in some instances) and non-paying to use, so listen to what were saying. And to other users, why slam another user for their opinions…, It doesn’t do anyone any good!

A top down management style never works.

I am warming up to the new design. As with any significant change with a software app update, there can be a period of transition, before you find yourself loving the new look, features, or functionality.

So I’m back to say that while I was negative at first, I am now coming around. For those of you that like the old interface, download the WP Classic plugin. I found that it worked fine. But since I work on sites at work that are a mixed bag of the new 3.8 and older versions . . . I found myself needing to spend time with the new and am appreciating it better. So it’s time to move on and embrace it.

If you feel there are issues with functionality, plugins, options . . . then by all means, bring it up on a different thread, so the volunteers can spend their time improving WP.
