It’s very unfortunate that the new “members plugin” owners are spamming upgrade ads WITH EVERY BLOCK one is editing.

I have no use of paid content memberships.
@MemberPress: WHY ARE YOUR BOTHERING YOUR USERS SO MUCH? NO RECOMMENDATION FOR YOUR SERVICE! GET LOST FROM MY ADMIN INTERFACE!

If anyone is interested: I’ve added a custom CSS to the WP admin to hide this nonsense.

SHAME ON YOU MEMBERPRESS for spoiling a great plugin!

    Hello,

The message you’re seeing in the block editor is part of the Members Block Permissions add-on that we included for free in Members 3.0. We hope you’re enjoying the all new functionality!

As for the message itself, it’s only visible within the “Permissions” tab added by the Block Permissions add-on. It’s limited to only that section.

We hope you continue to enjoy all the new, free features in Members!

That’s NOT true. Block Permissions is turned off (NONE of the add-ons is activated!).

To make myself clear: With EVERY block I edit there is your ad in the right column saying

To protect this block by paid membership or centrally with a content protection rule, upgrade to MemberPress.

    WTF?

THIS SUCKS – and is SPAMMING my block controls.

But again: I’m happy to just “display: none” to your nonsense – and will roll back to Justin’s version asap.

I can confirm and agree with what @stefanmeier has posted.

Despite having disabled the ‘content permissions feature’ in the plugin settings, the plugin is displaying an advertisement in the block editor. It opens every page/post edit and I had two customers call yesterday specifically to complain about this very thing.

Please rethink your approach to advertising as this is coming across as heavy-handed.

At the very least, only have the permissions block control (ie: ad) register and display if the “permissions” feature is enabled.

I can also confirm this. Maybe these screenshots help you to understand the issue:

    * Add-on Block Permissions not active: https://cloudup.com/cSGQpy5A0eP
    * Add-on Block Permissions active, type User Status, User Role, Capability: https://cloudup.com/czA0uY9zBdA
    * Add-on Block Permissions active, type Paid Membership, Content Protection Rule: https://cloudup.com/c6yQeKEDT9o

The upgrade notice in the first screenshot seems to be incorrect as the add-on is inactive and also false since you don’t necessarily need the MemberPress plugin for this add-on unless you want to use Paid Membership and Content Protection conditions. In this case the upgrade notice should be fine as is.

Same here – There is a constant advertisement for all user roles in the sidebar of the post editor, apparently as the basic default regardless of the settings or addons. I appreciate the “free” functionality but if this is intentional then frankly ‘offer all of the value for free and then simply bother the users into upgrading’ is not a good business model, and I would rather simply use a different plugin.

Noticing that it’s no longer showing after the latest update – thanks for listening!

I have the current version of Members on an all-current install, and this forced ad still shows on EVERY block in the editor for all users.

As soon as I started seeing this obnoxious up-sell, I immediately deactivated the Members plugin in all 100 of my clients’ websites. Fortunately, I can activate the plugin, set user roles as needed, then deactivate to avoid this forced advertising that’s confusing to clients who don’t have any desire nor need for restricted content at all.

This has already proven extra confusing for clients who already run Restrict Content Pro or some other non-MemberPress membership plugin. The extra, unwanted up-sell competes with the legitimate restriction controls and is totally unacceptable.

MemberPress, you’ve got a great core product and it’s a shame to see this sort of lowball tactics in this wonderful plugin of which you’ve taken ownership. I’m grateful that you’ve taken on Justin’s Members plugin with plans to continue expanding and improving it. It’s been part of my dev toolkit for years. But I’m disappointed and a bit shocked that a company that produces such good stuff would stoop to this level.

Unless this Permissions setting is removed from the Block controls for sites that are not using any add-on functionality, I’ll keep deactivating Members on production sites and/or including CSS to hide this (I don’t like having to resort to such hacky tactics). Bummer.

Hm, alright I take it back, ha. The ad is still showing. Not sure why it wasn’t for a second there but it’s back.

Yeah probably going to have to switch to a different plugin or hack it away with CSS. Showing ads to the Admin user is one thing, but I’m not going to subject my clients with lower user roles to ads that they have no interest or control over.

    Sorry, that’s a deal-breaker for sure.

    @caseproof

Just to add my 2 cents. I really appreciate you taking over the plugin and continuing development of this much loved plugin. Especially considering you have thrown in all the premium add ons too.

I have been watching these support threads (as I am sure many others are too) for a while before upgrading as I saw there were a few bugs and issues during the transition. As there haven’t been many support tickets recently, I took another look at the support forum and decided it was time to upgrade. Which so far has gone smoothly.

I have to say while I still very much appreciate your efforts and contributions, I do agree with some of the comments here too. I think you need to find a happy balance between ad placements. I totally understand you need to advertise your paid product, but I also think putting them inside the content editor is a bit too heavy handed.

I really hope you find a way to resolve this and appease your new members community. As these tickets are public, I think it would go along way if you showed that you listened and graciously accepted feedback, even when some of the feedback can be very direct and at times disrespectful.

By the way I think you had a really hard time out the gate, being assaulted before you even had a chance. What I noticed early on was that you were doing your best to resolve issues quickly despite the way some of the feedback was being delivered. I would just like to say that I think it will go along way to getting everyone back on side if you were to resolve these last issues.

Once again thanks for your hard work so far with Members and I wish you every success with MemberPress too :-).
