• Hi.

When someone clicks on Webcal, instead of opening the event in their Outlook it creates an entirely new calendar. Is there a way to fix this?

  • I tested this myself using a different calendar application.

The default behavior in Outlook for webcal:// is to create a new calendar.

If the scheme is http(s)://, and the mime type is text/calendar, then the default behavior is to create a new event in the default calendar.

The IANA provisional registration for the webcal:// scheme says:

    Scheme semantics:
Subscribing to calendars in iCalendar format

So, the short answer appears that if you have a web calendar application and you want people to subscribe to the calendar, the scheme should be webcal://

If you want people to import a single event, then the scheme should be http(s):// with the appropriate mime type and registered file extension (.ics).
