New comments not appearing in pending queue

  • Askimet is off until I can find another solution to this problem. Readers were adding comments and they immediately disappeared, never showed up in “Pending” comments. I never knew they commented, they never knew there was a problem. (Submitting a comment did not generate a “comment is pending approval” display on the post, either.)

    With Askimet disabled the problem went away and comments are behaving normally. (I stumbled on this workaround in a thread about this problem from 4 years ago.)

    Askimet had been installed for about 2 years. I’m using Version 2.5.9. The problem came to my attention 1 month ago, but before that I had stopped turning on commenting on new posts because no one seemed to be commenting. I have no idea how long it has been going on, no idea whether an Askimet or WP update coincided with the failure.

  • Do you have any other plugins installed on the site? Using one of the default (not modified) TwentyTwelve, TwentyTen or TwentyThirteen themes?

    I have Akismet enabled on quite a few sites and have never had an issues with comments not going through.

    Thanks for your reply. This site has 12 other plugins and a modified Simplethemes theme. I’m certain thousands of others are using Askimet successfully. As soon as I have half a day to spend in trial and error I will try to isolate the conflict. However disabling Askimet did immediately solve the problem at hand, so at least the site is processing comments correctly in the meantime.

    I’m having the same issue but with the add-on Jetpack. I disabled it and immediately commenting was fixed. Anyone know what part of Jetpack could be causing the comments to disappear?

    @denisseattle,sometimes a problem can be caused by plugins that “colide”. So, activate Akismet ,deactivate your other plugins to see if Akismet work properly. If it does, enable plugins one by one. FYI, for Akismet related questions, the best place is the Akismet support page.

    Thanks @jfisher2709 for the lead. We updated plugins including Jetpack. Now comments are working with Akismet activated. I regret that we didn’t update each one individually and test comments after each update. So this info does not isolate Jetpack and/or Akismet as the problem. Here’s the list of plugins we updated, maybe future searchers will find a correlation:

    Akismet was updated in mid August, which is about when the problem may have started. WordPress has no maintenance history function at all, so I have no way of knowing everything else was updated at the same time as Akismet. The really-simple-captcha plugin was updated then; we do not use it on comments.
