New domain redirecting to old deleted wordpress page

  • So about a year ago I had a blog on wordpress.com at the url milanfrancis.wordpress.com . At some point I decided I didnt want to use this anymore and instead of just switching to a new url i foolishly clicked the delete button on that one and seemingly disabled it from use forever. Now I am attempting to set up a website with the domain name milanfrancis.com hosted by dreamhost. I installed wordpress on the domain and now when I try to go to it and login to wordpress it redirects to milanfrancis.wordpress.com and says it doesnt exist “The address milanfrancis.wordpress.com cannot be registered. Sorry, that site is reserved!”.

    Im not sure what to do here because im not trying to use the wordpress hosting I have my own hosting from dreamhost and I feel like it shouldnt matter that the old .wordpress.com url was deleted, yet it redirects. I should also note that yesterday I mapped milanfrancis.com to another wordpress.com blog I had until deciding the wordpress.com didnt have enough capability for my needs and then unmapped it, including switching the dns nameservers back to the original dreamhost ones.

    Is there a way around this to make the domain name work or am I doomed to have to get a new domain name?
    Any help with this problem would be SO appreciated!!!!

  • Contact your new hosting and have them help you figure out the domain name stuff – what needs to happen is that you need to bind the domain name to your server – which is something your hosts can help you do. That is assuming you still own the domain name. If not, then yes, you would have to purchase a new domain name (or buy the old one from whoever owns it now). But yes, contact your new hosting provider and have them help you figure out what needs to happen in regards to your domain name situation.
