New images upload as "query mark" in place of image, since 3.8 update

    Hi,
    Since upgrading to WordPress 3.8, any new image I try to add to my media library appears as a blank box with a “?” in the centre rather than the image itself.

    If I try and click the image I get
    “Forbidden
    You don’t have permission to access /wp-content/uploads/2013/12/Laptop-and-money-XSmall.jpg on this server”

    previously uploaded images have not been affected.
