New install – images upload but won't display

I’m new to WordPress and I would surely appreciate any help.

I have just installed WordPress using the Softaculous Apps installer on my host server at ziacarini.com/wp. I did the upgrade to 4.4.2 and tried the reinstall.

Images seem to upload fine and I can see them with the cPanel file manager but they won’t display anywhere on the WordPress site – not as the header or on a page or in the Media Library.

The Media Library lists images that I’ve uploaded and the images are displayed when I select edit then edit image, but no thumbnail images (just blank squares)are displayed when I try to select an image for a header. When I click “select and crop” for a selected image for a header I just get the broken image icon in the crop image window.

I’ve tried adding media to a new page and just get an empty frame.
I’ve checked that the permissions for wp-content is 0755
All plug-ins are disabled

I’ve run out of ideas and need some sleep.
