• Very new to WordPress. Like 30 minutes new.
Downloaded it and tried to install it.

    Not going well.

First it said PHP was not running. (Don’t even know what that is)
Followed some other info I found on the WordPress site and it started talking about getting your SQL Server running.

    That is where I stopped.

I maintain several web sites. The program I have been using for years was Front Page then I have migrated to Expression Web 4. (Still don’t know anything about CSS or anything like that. I am able to maintain the old sites I have with it. I would like to start to branch out and get more sophisticated with them.

I’m thinking WordPress might be the easiest way for me to do that.

So, how do I get this installed and running so I can see if it is going to do what I want it to do??

  • Were you aware that you can only run WordPress on a web server?

No I was not. That might be a problem.

GoDaddy and Yahoo maintain some of my sites.

Is that a plus or minus??

I wouldn’t it suggest either for hosting a WordPress site. Although we do not personally endorse them, there are some hosts listed here. Alternatively, if you just want to try WordPress out, you could always install it on a local server.

    Trying it out?

Can I set it up to work on my computer as a local server and FTP the files to my sites?

As in giving it a test run to see if you really do want to use it on a new site before you actually shell out any cash.

You can certainly set it up on a local server on your computer (I’m running about 5 development sites on my local server atm) but you won’t need FTP. WordPress stores all of the site’s content in a database – not in any files. The only files/folders you’ll need to add are for themes and/or plugins and you can just drop them into the appropriate folder on the local server.
