I am installing WP 3.9.1 on a development subdomain link. I will change all the files over to the primary domain once the development phase is done and the migration phase is started. I am a Joomla Developer by trade but dabbled in WP sites for a few clients. Ever since the 3.0 roll out in the Joomla Platform i have been very unhappy with it and decided to strictly become a WP developer. Its much more manageable and better for SEO.

    Anyway my questions are:

When on the install.php page for the initial install, there is a selection for “privacy: Allow Search Engines To Index This Site” Do I want to check this box even though its on a development link?

And if i do not check this box, how do i make sure the site is indexed once the site launches under the primary domain?

Is there a way to check the box in the dashboard once the site is launched to the primary domain?

I know I do not want the subdomain development link indexed at all!

    Thank you!

Then please ensure you review Moving _WordPress before moving any files or folders.

I would. It’s a reversible change either way. All it does is add a no-index meta line into the page head for Google. Alternatively, you could install something like https://www.ads-software.com/extend/plugins/absolute-privacy/ and keep everyone out except registered users.

Same as any other site really – make a Google sitemap (there are plugins for this), grab a Google webmaster account, use good SEO practices then sit back & wait.

Yep – the checkbox can be ticked or cleared at any time via Settings -> Reading.

Generally speaking, you;’ll find that very little is carved in stone with WordPress. Most things can be changed at will over time. ??

Cool! Thank you! I am liking WP very much after the last few sites i have developed in this platform.

The files were already uploaded to the primary domain and theme was installed, I just had to configure the theme pages, menu, plugins..etc.

This is the first case of a complete install from the development staging link. Once the development is done, moving everything to the primary directory without breaking anything will be the next challenge.

    Thanks again!

Longer term, I’d suggest looking at developing a site in a sub-folder rather than a sub-domain. Then you can just allow WordPress to take over the root domain which is way easier than physically moving a WP site.

Its not too late, I could still do that. Which section of the page you suggested would refer to that?

btw, you been a big help and very much appreciated.

The link I have above should take to straight to the section you need – “Using a pre-existing subdirectory install”. Ignore the sections above & below that one.

No problem. It’s always a pleasure to help a fellow dev get to grips with WordPress. ??
