• When I try to add a link to the text in my blog now, a little box pops up. After I add the link to it, it won’t go away. There’s no X to close it, and applying the link doesn’t make it go away. This is really difficult to work around. I had problems with the version right before this, too -it liked to pop up overtop of what I was working on, but at least I could close it down.

Is there any way, like a plugin or whatever, to get rid of this problematic feature and just go back to the old pop up box that we had for years? It wasn’t broken, but now the “fixes” have broken it for sure.

    HI Sapphire!

Does this happen if you deactivate all your plugins or disable any browser extensions? Have you tried clearing your cache?

Same thing is happening to me since I upgraded to 4.5

I found workaround. select any other text on page, click on linking button on menu, then click any other text again. this will make the link box disappear.

Jose Castaneda, since I posted this, I found it’s not happening consistently. Sometimes I can click onto another bit of text, and it will revert to the previous little floating bar, and then I click anywhere else and it goes away.

It seems to happen most often when I need to change options, like “open in another window.”

I’m on a deadline, so there’s no time to be disabling everything and checking that. I did clear the cache, and that made it happen less often, but not gone completely. I may be able to disable some things for testing in a few days.

Keith, that does seem to work. Thanks!

Totally understand! Glad to see you are able to work it out but now it does ask the question of why it is even doing that. chuckles

Hoping for a fix for this irritating bug soon!

It seems to happen most often when I need to change options, like “open in another window.”

I still have the same issue as you guys and noticed it happens whenever I need to add links that open in a new tab, so I need the full options box to open (as it used to before). I find it annoying because after closing the options window, upon which point it seems to hang, nothing would get rid of it. Switching from visual to text mode, hitting return, selecting other stuff.

The workaround I first used was to add the link via the options box as per usual and when it hangs there after, just click so the cursor is on a random space, part of the text or line where there is no link or linked text, and click the “Remove Link” button.

It really shouldn’t be happening at all, but this managed to get rid of the box for me. But I too hope for a prompt fix – it’s quite annoying when you have to add a hundred links, and I’d prefer not to have to resort to more plugins to control it.

That said, someone wrote a plugin that turns off the inline modal link which those of you having issues might find useful: Advanced WPLink https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/advanced-wplink/
FYI: Enable/disable the inline linking tool via the plugin settings, but it disables it by default on install

This has been an ongoing problem for several versions now. The only way I can get around it is to save as a draft every single time I add a link. Obviously that is just crazy and time consuming. Whatever was put in when they changed the thing with the hyperlinks simply needs to be taken out. What once worked fine is now a disaster. I appreciate the link for the workaround and it will hopefully help but I do wonder why one should have to add yet another plugin to fix a problem that wasn’t even an issue before.

Get used to that. I’ve been “adding plugins to roll back changes” for 4-5 years now. I can understand that I’m not the only user, and they can’t give every single one of us every single thing they want. But in every case of a change I haven’t liked, the old code is still in there, so I don’t know why these things aren’t optional. It’s not like they’re stripping out the old functionality in favor of what the majority wants. They’re just remodeling over top of it, but you still have to add a plugin to go back to the old method.

    Same thing here!
Not a show stopper, but very annoying…
Keith’s trick to select another word, add and remove a link works,
but it is a bit frustrating to see that it has been there for so long.

    I just opened a ticket.
