I am seeing a new ‘LIVE’ label next to my site name in the toolbar. Why is this, how to disable it? I am getting questions about it, and not clear why this is part of a recent woocommerce update.

    Thanks

    Hi @adrianduffell

“create an overwhelming amount of choices for users” isn’t that what the ‘Advanced’ settings section is for? To tell users they need to know more before fiddling with things in there? But even then, I thought we are all about choice in this day and age?

To quote UpDraft Plus: “Show expert settings – click this to show some further options; don’t bother with this unless you have a problem or are curious.” Perhaps Woo can do something similar.

Woo already has quite a few options. So what is your limit? Would this one extra option push past that limit and break the internet? At least if the various options are laid out in a certain way, beginners will know where to tread carefully while not being overwhelmed. And if they are, well, that’s self-hosting for you, where you have (or are supposed to have) full control, which I admit could be a bit much for some. They could instead try wordpress.com, or Shopify or Etsy. There is a reason I went straight for self-hosting and I drive stick.

If someone accidentally puts the site in coming soon mode, I’m sure someone will notice soon enough, if the owner really cares. If it was then that much of an issue, I’m sure the perpetrator will be reprimanded.

With great power comes great responsibility.

Also, with many hosts now offering staging site setups in seconds, with partial or full push back to live, something like this from Woo is pretty needless for many. If I want to make changes to the site and still be able to trade in the meantime, I won’t want to use the Woo coming soon function. No, I’m not trying to adopt any Apple store tactics. Apple is in a league of their own.

But ok, if some might find this useful, by all means, keep it. Just make it easier to remove it. Yes, I implemented the workaround, but I can’t say I’m keen to keep doing so every time you or another plugin does something this. We can’t be expected to keep installing plugins to fix other plugins. I’ve already had to install one just to open all external affiliate product links in a new tab, because you don’t, for some odd reason, have a setting to change that. A setting that I would consider way more useful than the ‘Live’ function. My one site already has 27 plugins….

So again, I think I can see how this might be useful for some, but it is completely and utterly useless for me and I’m sure countless others. I noticed it immediately the moment the page refreshed after the update, my first reaction was no, just no.

“So while we consider it really important to listen and respond to those who post feedback and voice their opinions on forums, they only represent a tiny fraction of our end users. (you sure about that?) When making decisions on how to move forward with future versions of WordPress, we look to engage more of those users who are not so vocal online.”

Duly noted. Good to know I’m talking to myself….at least I have some time on my hands at the moment, hence these novels.

I worked in the restaurant business for a while. One thing I learned from experience; it’s the customers who keep quite that you need to worry most about.

I agree with everything @sean-h said, but I am busy adding and documenting custom code so I can’t contribute more

Is this feature really neccessary? Our template already has such a function built in. This live button is distracting and drawing too much attention.

@bozzmedia – regarding the empty page: Do you have the Woocommerce marketing hub disabled? Perhaps through another plugin or code snippet? This new gadget seems to rely on it.

I question the need to add even more clutter to the WordPress/Woocommerce dashboard. That being said some function to temporarily “hide” the website (coming soon, under construction …) is missing from WordPress in general. For example in “Joomla” this is a built-in feature since forever.

The ability to manually put a site into maintenance mode is great. But it should be in WordPress core, why are we doing it in WooCommerce?

This is really a bad idea. Why?
I know that the shop is live.

You could just show a label when “coming soon” mode is enabled.
Please at least add an option to complete disable the label. In my opinion it does confuse more than it helps. I also don’t want to implement some hack or whatever.

    Thanks

When was the last time anyone saw Amazon in ‘maintenance mode’ ? Bueller, anyone?

I just want to add my voice that I find this label distracting and unnecessary. It’s nice that there is now a maintenance/coming soon feature. And people who want to use it can enable it. But I don’t think it should be enabled by default. Personally, I have a hard time believing that the majority of WooCommerce stores toggle between live and maintenance mode much, if at all. The fact that Apple does it doesn’t convince me either. I find it pretty funny that this detail-oriented, trillion dollar company still goes through these motions. I do not think they really need to do this anymore. It’s a marketing gimmick at this point. Anyone who needs to change or update their store in a big way and doesn’t want any in-between states visible to users has a staging site. Of course, it’s no big deal. Me and my site will survive. But I can totally see how annoying this change is for web developers and web agencies who have to explain to all their confused clients what this means and why it’s there…

This indicator should be on the dashboard page, not in the admin bar.

You could just show a label when “coming soon” mode is enabled.

    @georgr

    THIS.

This is not distracting and has the same function. IF there is label showing, you know it’s the coming soon mode. If not, you know it’s the LIVE server.

I hated this live badge from the very first second I saw it. And yes I had clients being concerned since the LIVE label of course appeared in dev and stage sites, causing confusion. I disapprove plugin authors acting as if their plugin is the only one in the world and cluttering the global menu, and I already have more than enough workarounds for useless stuff like this.
Having a sign popping up only if CommingSoon is active might be a good compromise if they insist to have a badge, but even better to put it into the dedicated Woo screen space like in the woo admin screens, not in the global menu.

It is designed to indicate your WooCommerce site’s visibility status, and it is useful for many users, especially while performing maintenance on their store. Even developers can see whether the site is live or in maintenance mode before making any changes to it.

Bull shister … Let’s face it, this label and functionality was designed by someone trying to justify their job at WooCommerce … In no shape or form do we ever need (or did we ask for) this, when there is so much more that could be improved instead of this waste of time.
