• It was blocked but I amconcerned that within minutes of enabling use of my mailgun lists I immediately got spam comments via email.mg.mydomain.com. Mailgun tell me “make sure there are no harmful files lingering around.” I use Wordfence, antispam bee blocked the spam so that works. I am on a VPS droplet on DigitalOcean fwiw

    Should I do more?

  • Hello Patbell101,

Sorry for the spam on your email accounts. If you’re using security to make sure your site is not being infiltrated by malware, then that is good. Scripts that generate spam can often be loaded into websites. The way you’re getting spam suggests that your domain may already be on a spammer’s list, your website may be openly showing that email address, or you might have a script generating spam on your server. We often use SSH to review the mail logs to see where emails coming from in order to determine the source of the email.

If you can’t take that step then you should talk with your mail host to get more information. A WordPress installation itself typically has nothing to with a mailgun subdomain immediately getting spam – unless it’s infiltrated with malware that is the source of the spam. Your mail issue still would be better off addressed with your mail host.

    Kindest regards,
    Arnel C.
