• I like the new way media get inserted, but am not so happy with the width of the .media-sidebar (when using a larger then 1024px display)
Most important information; like image-size, link url and other gets truncated, while in the most probable use, inserting a single image, all the space in the middle is just unused or showing images that are not relevant at that point.
The fields to enter alt text, descriptions, etc. look like they are less important and in that way are less likely to be used.

Now there are 3 very different ways the image information is presented, on upload, from the media lib and when using the “edit”link on the image in the editor. Every time the layout is very different.

    Just my 2cents ??

  • The biggest problem I’ve run into since the update is that images within inserted galleries are not sharp! This is a huge problem for a photography site. I’m not sure why this is happening, something in the way the images are resized to fit the gallery slideshow. This was never an issue before the update, has anyone else noticed this problem? If not, look again.

@jkputnam I don’t use galleries so I can’t confirm what you are saying about that, however I have noticed it when inserting photos into a post. For example, if the image in the library is 800 pixels wide and I choose my default medium set width of 600 px, that image is not as sharp. This didn’t used to be the case. For me it’s an annoyance because I can simply reduce the size of the photo, but for you I could definitely see how that would be a big problem :-/

@jkputnam I think you should have opened a separate thread for the problem you refer to, as it very different from the other points discussed in this thread and will not get the attention it deserves here.

I still postpone the updates, because usually there is a .1 version within a month and a lot of plugin updates within the first weeks after a major update. as soon as I update relevant sites I will try to remember to check the quality of the images and report my findings.

I agree with chocks and technabob:

    1) Default to Upload Files instead of Media Library
    2) Default to only files uploaded to the current post after uploading images.

and it would be great to be able to easily set this in functions.php

you know, in case anyone up there is listening!

Hi all. Just wanted to share a plugin that I stumbled across that may help some of you with the “set featured image” annoyance. It’s a drag & drop featured image box that replaces the current featured image box on the right side of the post editor.

I’ve tested out and found that after I drag and drop an image, a progress circle appears but never goes away, thus displaying the image. However, once the post is published the featured image is in fact there.

The other thing, and they DO state this in the plugin description, is that if you use the select from media library option, once the image is selected the page WILL refresh to add the image. So that could be an issue if your post is half written and you haven’t saved as draft to save changes.

Anyway, if anyone is interested here it is

@amandascookin I mentioned the plugin in the beginning of this thread and use it on one site. Thanks for the heads-up about the page refresh… have not had problems with it sofar, but nice to know I have to be careful.

@webtaurus sorry about that, I missed that, this thread is getting large ??

As far as the “Default to Upload Files Tab”, this won’t be supported. See: https://core.trac.www.ads-software.com/ticket/22186#comment:46

    Any other possibilities?

I totally agree that we need more freedom here.

Hi MrDamasajaga – as I mentioned earlier, there’s no real need for “Default to Upload Files Tab” – you can also drag images into the page whilst on the MEDIA LIBRARY tab, just the same.

That is indeed a really great feature photoMaldives.
In my use case however I don’t want to confront the novice users with such a clouded view and show them the steps to take. Some people don’t even know how to drag and drop in a site.

Anyhow there is a fix now!

@webtaurus @amandascookin – thank you so much for the drag&drop featured image plugin reference! SO much better than the unfortunate new way of uploading in 3.5!

I keep getting an upload error in a pink box. The photos show up in the media library and on the post, but when I go to the Set Featured Image, there are no images there. The old posts I have don’t show thumbnails in the dashboard and the pages I created before the change happened don’t show any photos either, only text. When I ty to click on the Visual tab instead of Text, nothing happens. Can anyone help??

The problem with this insistence of WordPress and many others to depend on drag-n-drop is that many of us don’t work on 27″ computer monitors and have many application windows opened and/or we have files to upload organized into folders buried within other folders (I have image files organized into main-directory/year/month directories making it a hassle to open these folders to do drag-n-drop).

The WordPress team has done a great job advancing the software forward but I wish there was some leeway to keep previous UI designs.

Truthfully I prefer the older 3.4.x UI for adding media. I know I’m very much at fault for not using the beta versions submitting my concerns during development. Teaches me to not be involved for feedback until after the fact.

Niferno – You should make your own topic for this (and when you do, make sure you’ve tested with all your plugins off).

Since the upgrade to 3.5.1, I’ve had two hard freezes of my Mac (running 10.6.8 and Safari 5.1.7) while trying to upload a single photo to the media library. (Different images each time.) I had to turn the computer off to recover. Needless to say, this isn’t how it should work.
