• I am updating my friend’s site. I have added a page; the link appears in the top navigation menu, but the text that is supposed to appear when you click on this link does not show up. I am not the original designer of this site, but I have been successful in editing text on pages that were already there. I have cross-checked the settings for the new page with pages that already existed and nothing seems to be different. Here is a link to the site: https://www.adolescentcounselingstl.com/. I am having problems with the “Specialties” tab.

The site was created in 2012 and has not been updated since; I don’t know what version is being used.

  • When I look at the HTML source for the Specialties Page, I’m not seeing any of the content output after the closing header tag, which makes me think you may be getting a PHP error you’re not seeing. Why it would be on just that page I don’t know, but if your server has been updated and your WordPress install hasn’t, doing a backup of your database and files and then updating to the latest version of WordPress and your theme might solve the problem. Before doing that, I’d look for an error_log file in your /public_html folder to see if you can find out what the error is.

By the way, you can find out what version of WordPress you’re running by looking on the home page of the admin side in the Dashboad “At a Glance” section, or by going Dashboard -> Updates.

    Thank you for your response.

I updated WordPress and that didn’t make a difference to the page I created before the update, so I tried creating another new page and that didn’t work either.

I also updated all the plugins, since they had never been updated. That made no difference.

I saw an option to update themes, but the four that are listed appear to have nothing to do with the theme this site is using; we have Balance by yootheme and the four choices for updating were 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014. I updated all of those; still no difference.

Is it possible to update the actual theme we are using without having the original login information used by the one who created the site? I am not the person who set up the site originally through yootheme, and yootheme requires a membership to log in; even if I created a membership I suspect I would not be allowed access to update someone else’s work.

I have no experience with /public_html folder; don’t know where to find it or what to do with it if I do find it. Can you offer any guidance there?

    Thanks again.

I’m not familiar with the theme you’re using, or with yootheme, but typically these days commercial themes are sold on a subscription basis so that you pay an annual fee for the rights to download and install updates. Most likely, if you want to stick with that theme, you can just sign up for an account with yootheme and download the current version–if there is one–and install it. They should have instructions on doing the update, but I would inquire with them before you subscribe if there is a way to get in touch with them.

However, I would want to know if the theme is the issue before I spent any money. One way to do that is to switch to one of the default themes, like Twenty Thirteen, for example, to see if it fixes the problem. If it doesn’t, it’s most likely not the theme and you can switch back.

If it’s not the theme, you could try deactivating all your plugins and see if that solves the problem. If it does, you can reactivate them one at a time to find the culprit.

If neither of those identifies the problem, try to get a look at the error_log file. It may point you in the direction of a plugin or the theme causing a problem. To find out, you’ll need FTP or control panel access to the hosting account the site is on. It looks like that might be Bluehost. You may need to contact their tech support to find out how to access your file system to find the root HTML folder. It’s usually /public_html on Apache servers, but sometimes /var/www on others. The hosting company can tell you.

    Hi sharynessman

Could you please add the page back. If you have added new page and given you have named the page name correctly – like Specialties – the page will show up with Specialties.

and url will have ext like – https://www.adolescentcounselingstl.com/specialties/

I get it. So I told my friend that as long as everything else is working fine, there is not need to make any drastic change. I took the material that was supposed to go in a new page and worked into an already existing page, and it looks good. I pointed out that if anything else ever needs to be updated he might want to switch to a more usable theme; as things stand right now his site is primarily informative and static, so we are going to put the update on a back burner. He had wondered if Bluehost might be able to give some guidance, so we will keep your advice in mind if we ever need to take further steps.

It’s a shame that whoever he hired to put together the site originally seems to have stuck him with a complicated, and costly, design, when all he really needed was a very basic site with a few links and not much more.

    Thanks again.

Bluehost might indeed help you out. They are well-known WordPress hosts.

    Good luck with it.
