  • Just to start, I’m not one of the WordPress developers, and I have had nothing to do with any of the decision process for that feature.

From what I know, that change was made to try and promote security for new users and force (as much as possible) secure passwords. Doing it this way, you’ll either enter your own password for the user, or use the system-derived one and have the user change it for themselves.

    Thanks for the reply.

I am running WordPress on my localhost and it have all above features i required in user-profile section. But fields which are missing are on hosted domain.

What version are you running on both systems?

I ask because that changed in versions, and for no other reason that I know of.

In WordPress 4.3, if you have Javascript disabled or broken, then you will get the normal New Password and Repeat New Password fields. If you have Javascript enabled and running normally, then you only get the Generate Password button.

If you get two things on two different sites, then on one of them, you’re not running Javascript for whatever reason. Could be something in your browser blocking Javascript code.

If you see the Generate Password button, and click it, then it will generate a strong password for you. You may choose to override that password and type in your own. If you use a weak password, then a checkbox will appear to confirm your decision to use a weak password. Either way, it won’t stop you from using a weak password, and there will not be a Repeat Password field.

On the whole, the use of the Repeat Password field is actually less secure. The main reason for it existing was because passwords were typically hidden behind dots. You’re typing blind. Therefore, the repeat field is to make sure you typed it the same way twice. However, this encourages passwords that are easy to remember and/or type. Actually showing the user the password as they type it makes them more confident that they typed it correctly, and eliminates the need for the second field. Additionally, adding in live confirmation about whether the password they have chosen is a good or bad one encourages them to pick good ones. The checkbox to confirm that they want to use a weak password encourages them to not use a weak password in the first place, and to make a stronger one. All this is designed to improve password security and reduce password related problems.

I don’t understand what you are talking about.

On my web site I publish articles for others apart from my own. Unless I add them as an author their name will not show as the author of that article.
Until this update I could register one of the gmail addresses I have and makeup a new password. Now I can’t do that it. Last week it was quite a performance to add someone.

How do I get around that please?

Thank you so much for your reply.

You mean to say that this is done by default in WordPress 4.3 to make password secure and strong?

But i posted this same issue on wordpress.stackexchange.com/ and there a person replied that some plugin is over riding the fields. Try deactivate plugin one by one and check which plugin is overriding. I didn’t tried it because i don’t wanna mess with website. I am search of better solution.

@sfinn2013: You still can put in your own password. Click the Generate Password button, then type in the password you want. It will generate one, and you can override that one. You do not need a Repeat field, because the password is not hidden any more. You can see what you type in for the password.

@sohaaib: Yes, this is the new default in WordPress 4.3. The people on the StackExchange were mistaken, this is not a plugin doing this, it is the default of WordPress.
