  • This is a very cool plugin, but I think there is some sort of complication with this plugin:

Which adds the name of the domain to every external link to track it…

Very cool plugin and it works flawlessly. Any idea’s on how to get it to just apply to the links contained within posts and not on the sidebar?

pigizen — that plugin alters the links to be non-external before the page is sent to the browser. the external links icon plugin runs in the browser (it’s just javascript), and so it can’t tell that the links are external. If the structure of the url’s are consistent, you could probably hack it to make it work.

eragle, if you download the latest version, it has an admin page that lets you change lots of settings. One of those is the containers. These are the CSS classes or id’s that should have the styled links applied. This is going to be theme dependent, but in my case, I only want links in posts styled, so I have my Containers set to: “.entry p,.entrytext p”.

eragle, checked out your blog… love it!

    Real nice work mate thanks

Thanks, I got the External Link Icon Plugin working on my soon-to-go-public radio site. Thanks. This was one of my 1st experiments with the actual CSS – I had to copy code from one of your commenters, and I copied your linky icon if you don’t mind. Some more code-examples of useage would be handy if anyone has time to show me more CSS arrangements for this tiny icon.

P.S.It would be bonus points if you packaged up a default-icon with your plugin ??

I simplified indicating an external link: I added a class “site” to my stylesheet that prepends a small *.gif indicating either a link or a download link. View it here:

It’s rudimentary, but gives complete control over how and when it’s used.
