• Top Cat is a WordPress plugin that allows you to specify a main category for your posts. Even though WordPress posts can have more than one category, you may want to specify which of them is the main category. Top Cat lets you do this when creating or editing posts, and also provides template tags for displaying the main category of each post.

Using style sheets, you can then apply different styling to posts based on their main category, even if they belong to the same set of categories. For an example, see my Bennettarium website.

For details, examples, download and so on, see the main Top Cat WordPress plugin page.

  • Hmmm. Looks like it might be useful (it would tie in with something else I’m fiddling with), but I’ve got a bit of a problem. I only get radio buttons for two categories. You can see what I mean in this post on my site. That’s with Firefox 1.0.4, WinXP.

    Any ideas?

EDIT: Just checked, and it appears the same in *shudder* IE6

Thanks very much for trying out the plugin! Here’s a guess at what the problem is.

Top Cat assumes that all categories have consecutive ID numbers starting at 1. If, for example, your category ID numbers are 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, … (perhaps category 3 was deleted) then Top Cat thinks there are only two categories.

Is this the case? Do you have a category with ID 3? Let me know.

Regardless, I will implement a more robust way of adding the radio buttons.

Yes, that’s exactly right – I don’t have a category 3. I must have deleted it at some point. Thanks.

OK, that is now fixed — Top Cat now adds a radio button to every category checkbox regardless of ID number.

Go get it! Top Cat 1.0.2

(The plugin repository seems to be ignoring my $Revision$ tags. Most annoying.)
