New SPAM levels are way way up!

    normally, I get like less than 5 spammers trying to use comments on my twice weekly posts…and I both block their IP and toss same.

    but, in the past 3 weeks I’m suddenly getting like 100 a day…all from Europe – mostly from Poland and Germany.

    Pisses me off….and yes, I’ve just tightened up my filters…but I was just wondering if anyone else has been having these new idiots too?

  • Are you using anti-spam plugins?

    That’s the (very annoying) nature of spammers/bots – they seem to “discover” a site – anti-spam plugins are the best way to cope with it.

    yes….I’ve tightened up the site as much as I can…my spam count today was down to 13…so that’s a positive sign….

    just wondering more about “where” this spam is from more than how to stop same…

    anyone else getting .pl & .de comment spams?

    Yes, it’s VERY common.

    okay, can someone look at this for me and tell me if I’m correct in my thinking here?

    in Settings > Discussions > Comment Blacklist….

    can i use this string – 178.238.234.* – to indicate that ALL IPs within that range via the asterisk will be unable to leaave comments?

    ie does the * work?

    There are two boxes there for blocking certain visitors. Even if you have only 178.238.234 (no need of star – read the note there), WordPress will stop any such IP with that part. I think even 178 should do, but it would have a much larger coverage. Similarly, in the lower box add words or parts of words (one below the other) that you commonly find in spams, such as escort, payday, loans, etc.

    then sadly NO IT DOES NOT WORK…and in my WP notes on the Discussion page there is NO note about an * being used either!

    I blocked out as I said – 178.238.234.* – and today I got three from
    178.238.234.105 and 178.238.234.107

    therefore use of the & (asterisk) as a wildcard to block out all of the last 3 digits…does NOT work….

    sigh….

    These are the notes:

    When a comment contains any of these words in its content, name, URL, e-mail, or IP, it will be held in the moderation queue. One word or IP per line. It will match inside words, so “press” will match “WordPress”.

    Comment Blacklist, which almost looks similar also has:

    So, the IP without the wildcard may work. You have to actually test and see what suits you.

    Also, try the box that says Comment author must have a previously approved comment.
