  • Apparently it IS sneaky spyware – perhaps mandated by Facebook. Trying to see if this unacceptable update and the poorly programmed “nag” button which won’t disappear or allow you to “decline”, meant that I couldn’t now use the plugin; every page I clicked on gave a browser warning:

“This organization’s certificate has been REVOKED. Security certificate problems may indicate an attempt to fool you or intercept any data you send to the server.”

Spent a lot of time vetting this plug-in, liked it, used it for a long time, now completely worthless to me – I can’t put subscribers data or privacy in jeopardy like this. [You probably can tell this hits a nerve – having been burned twice before by Facebook and its privacy violations]

rrjmdpa – I hear you. I have reverted back to previous version while I look for a replacement. Hopeful that dev will see this post and comment on it, but I have also notified WPORG to also review this. I am trying to be optimistic. With over 100K user base you would think someone would be interested in clearing this up if its a misunderstanding? However, the NAG Message and Acceptance – the way it’s structured I believe, goes against WordPress Detailed Plugin Guidelines – Specifically Item. #7

    Thomas and rrjmdpa,

Thanks for contacting us. We apologies for the inconvenience that the terms of service message can’t be closed. We will be fixing this in the next update which should be available shortly.

Version 6.2 brings new features, including analytics from Facebook and ShareThis. To enable analytics, non-personally identifiable browsing data is stored and aggregated, and also used for interest based targeting of ads elsewhere. This is similar to other popular analytics services, and is not spyware, and please read the privacy policy for more details at simplesharebuttons.com/privacy. Since you are updating from a previous version, these features are only activated if you click to accept the terms.

Hopefully this provides clarification. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

Thank you for your response and explanation.

For the time being, I’ve regressed to version 6.1.5. I am actually interested in the new analytics features but I’m feeling a bit gun shy from the 6.2 update failure, which I’m sure is how many users are feeling right now.

I think presenting a clearer and more transparent explanation of what the update offers before installation rather than locking out the user from the previous version and forcing them to update would be a smarter way to handle this situation.

As is stands, I’ll stick with 6.1.5 until I hear from more users, especially early adopters, and then decide if I want to continue with Simple Share Buttons Adder.

TBH, I hope it all works out well for everybody.

Yeh, not nice. There also should be a way to dismiss that notice without accepting it.

While I can appreciate the recent clarification, I am NOT interested in the added feature set and want to be able to get rid of the NAG Message.

Are you telling me the only way you will stop the Nag message is by ACCEPTING your NEW Terms ?

These two updates have DONE NOTHING but modify your NAG Message and add the same link TWICE …how is that valuable at all ?

Please provide a way to get rid of the nag message !!!!

    Thanks

…and by the way, I could even accept the new terms of service, IF I could read them.

It seems that the certificate on the plugin home page has been revoked, which seems a “bit” suspicious.

@SimpleShare, please, could you clarify what’s happening?

exactly, AND leaving us ‘hanging’ for several days without a word from the ‘author’, seems like ‘the middle finger’

Sorry, but I can’t go forward with this plugin. I already deactivated it on my sites. So unfortunate…another plugin developer has been sucked into the “spy on everything we do” vortex.

    Hi everyone,

Thank you for reaching out and reporting on the latest plugin update. We do want to first apologize for the issues that you are seeing on your end.

Currently we are transferring our SSL certificate which is the cause of those pages not loading. For the time being you can access the privacy and terms of service pages here: https://simplesharebuttons.com/privacy/.

As for the lingering NAG message, this is something that will be released on the next plugin update.

Please bare with us as we are still transitioning and will have future updates to come.
If you have any other questions please let us know.

Still “SSL certificate revoked” error, even with the new address.

I have disabled the plugin after updating it to ver 6.2.2 and getting the nag link that leads to page that will not load due to SSL certificate revoked.

Wanted to revert to an earlier version, but the Developers page for this plugin at www.ads-software.com only lists the current version as available for download.

    https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/simple-share-buttons-adder/developers/

I find it troubling and worrisome when previous versions are not available. Have lost faith in this plugin at this time.
