• Hello everyone and thanks for reading this.

I’m new to WordPress. I tried it years ago, but I then got involved with Drupal and ExpressionEngine.

I’m hoping to find a place online that I can ask questions about how to do things I’m used to doing with other the aforementioned CMSs. I know that not all CMS platforms are the same and there might not be an equivalent – which is good, actually.

Does anyone have any suggestions of a place online that I can ask such questions? For example: What would be the WordPress equivalent to custom fields as implemented in Drupal? Is there?

Anyhoo, any guidance would be great. Every platform has its strength and I’d like to leverage WordPress as an option to clients.

custom field -> Look at the “Advanced Custom Fields” plugin.

I run Drupal and WordPress and CraftCMS (and sometimes OctoberCMS)

You can build a “content types” in WordPress using a “registered post type” and then Advanced Custom Fields.

    Register a post type :
    https://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/how-to-create-custom-post-types-in-wordpress/
But of course, as we say in Drupal – there’s a module for that! Lol, :
    https://en-ca.www.ads-software.com/plugins/custom-post-type-ui/

Here is how to build your custom fields :
    https://en-ca.www.ads-software.com/plugins/advanced-custom-fields/

    They work together.

I would not refer to WordPress as a platform in the same sense as Drupal.
(though many would). Bc of the crowd of people using and supporting WordPress, the community is huge and active. The other side of that is that it’s a great space to monetize plugins, functionality, etc.

Post back to here or the appropriate forum with any questions, etc.

    Hello,

Thank you to both of you for the info. So, this forum is a good place to ask questions as such?

I’ll check out Advanced Custom Fields/Type UI. Thank you.

Like I said before, each CMS has its function. For some sites I build – Drupal is overkill. But I don’t think I would build a WordPress site for a congressperson (I work for Congress). I could be wrong as I don’t know that much about WordPress, yet.

But I’m looking forward to learning more. WordPress seems great to set up a quick website and get content out.

…and let’s be honest, WordPress has the backend UI nailed. This is huge, especially when building client sites.

Is there a module similar to module_filter in Drupal?

If you’re using enough plugins to require that, you’re using too many plugins. (note: I bailed out at D7. ??

    Ha ha!! I get it.

Funny, I was just looking and thought to myself “dang, that’s a lot of plugins” and am now going back and removing some. You would I’d know better. Envato elements doesn’t help.

I didn’t think that I had a lot of plugins, but the pro version of Elementor will make some unnecessary. I’ll pick that and NextGen gallery up tomorrow.

Drupal 7 is good. But I have a feeling that there were a lot of devs that jumped out at D8.

    Thanks!

The leap from D7 to Drupal8 is massive. Dries brought on Symphony and it shows. It’s like a brand new product, and with a lot of the modules implemented in core. There’s even gonna be an actual migration path up to Drupal9!

That said, it’s interesting you said you would not build Drupal out for a congressman as an example. I have more faith in Drupal security than WordPress in some areas. But it’s a numbers game as well, there’s simply more hackers going at WordPress.

Elementor Pro is very good. So is Beaver Builder. They both create rapid development for most clients. NextGen ….

    Hello,

Yes, Drupal did improve in the D7->D8 move and added many improvements.

Maybe I misspoke, the House uses Drupal exclusively for their websites. I work on them every day and they are planning on making the move to D8 with the upcoming congress transition. It is a modified version of Drupal which allows the admin to be on a separate server than the front-end.

To get moving on things quickly, I’m probably going to get a theme with a page builder baked in.
