New to WordPress- HELP!

  • Hi everyone,

    I am new to using wordpress (and developing in general) and am trying to orchestrate site development for a friend of mine.

    I currently use GoDaddy and have the wordpress hosting set up already. I have also purchased a pre-created template to use and uploaded it to the GoDaddy FTP.

    I am running into the following issues:
    1. The directions for the template I purchased (from ThemeForest. It’s a word press specific template) are for a different version of WordPress. Can’t even find starting suggestions such as where to change the way permalinks are treated in the site.
    2. I uploaded all of the pieces to the FTP and yet am still not showing the template on WordPress. What else do I need to do before I can use it?
    2. I have no experience with WordPress and am having trouble grasping the tool. Any recommendations for a new user would be great.

    Any help whatsoever with these items would be GREATLY appreciated. Between a rock and a hard place right now. Thanks!

  • #3: The Codex is really very useful. Between that and these forums WordPress has some of the best docs I’ve seen.

    #2: You need to upload the theme to wp-content/themes. It should be unzipped and should be in its own directory. So a theme named ‘Howdy-Ho’ would be in (something like) “wp-content/themes/howdyho/”

    #1: Worry about that after the theme shows up and you can select it. After that enable debugging and see what happens. Be warned, depending on which version the theme was made for you could be in for some work converting it.

    Hi there,

    Thank you so much for the fast response! I checked the directory and found that I didn’t have it in the themes section, just wp-content. I went ahead and moved it but I’m confused. The wp-content container has 3 themes now (cosmos, twentyten and twenty eleven) but when I go to WordPress themes, I only see wu wei.

    Why can’t I see the new theme? I will check out the Codex. Thanks so much!

    wu wei? What? You see a theme that isn’t in the wp-content/themes folder?
