• HI I am totally new to WP and I have a few questions. Right now I am working on a site for a makeup artist. I am going to do the site in CSS but would like to add a blog area where she can post about different makeup info and all. How do I do this?? Can I use an existing theme from WP and taylor it to my own design? Can I just add one page called blog that displays all of the posts??? I am totally lost bc there is sooo much info out there that is it now confusing me!

  • Yes to all of the questions really, you just install WordPress to the blog area you envisage, and can choose from whatever theme you like and modify it however you feel, or make your own from scratch if your really up to it!

Have you installed WordPress yet, if so what are you confused/having problems with?

If not i’d say most things come clear when you’ve installed it, bc it’s really easy to use.

No, I haven’t installed it yet so maybe I should so I can play around with it. Should I just use wordpress.com or use www.ads-software.com where I can install it to my server?

How would I install it to the blog area? Is it easy to figure out once I install it??

If you want to use your own CSS and customise the theme and its templates, I’d recommend the latter.

How would I install it to the blog area?

Install WP in a sub-folder off root called ‘blog’?

If you’re a web developer used to HTML, CSS & PHP, yes.

Personally it’s easy to use without experience of coding, but the negative point about this is that you won’t be able to get everything exactly to your needs.

However most of it is very user-friendly, and with the use of things like widgets and plugins you can just click around and add/modify what you want.

awesome, thanks so much for everyone’s help…and so quick too!! I have used CSS before and I’m ok at it. I just need to install it and play around. I might be getting confused about nothing..hahaha. Now I need to purchase a domain name and get everything setup with a hosting company. Anyone have any recommendations?

Please take a look at Hosting

How hard is it to customize an existing wordpress theme? I already have a design for the site but haven’t coded it in CSS yet. Should I just use a theme that comes with wordpress and replace the images or do one from scratch??

You would need to edit the CSS mainly, please look into a Addon for Firefox called FireBug. Its worth your time as you can inspect each and every CSS element of a page and even edit it too see real-time changes.

It’ll help you code CSS as you can then understand by looking at various similar themes and use the same styles if required.

A CSS mainly uses a class and using a good IDE like dream weaver, code is automatically generated. Just give it a shot, its not as hard as it looks.

altering existing themes is not so hard, once you understand what core code for WP functions are, where they go, etc

My first few themes all started as edits on someone else’s theme and grew from there

cool, thanks. I did a site in CSS before so I am kinda familiar with it. I will definitely look into Firebug!

I suggest to try free PHP, HTML, CSS, JavaScript editor – Codelobster PHP Edition with special WordPress plug-in for web development.
