New type of spam?

  • I have Bad Behaviour installed and it works.
    However lately I am getting very weird comment spam:
    1. For the commenter’s URI it is a legit, normal blog site (and the owners are totally innocent!)
    2. In the comment text there are one or two links to other – again – innocent blogs
    3. The IP points somewhere to Cameroon and other strange places.

    The comments are in the moderation queue. What I don’t understand, what’s the point for those doing this?
    Anybody else experiencing similar “comments”? Any explanation for the purpose of it?

  • Maybe to get more links pointing to their site, hence better SEO? Just taking a guess, I don’t know…

    Clint, that the strange thing: it is NOT the blog owners making the comments! If I go to their sites usually there is an apologetic post about somebody stealing/using their URL when making these fake comments.

    Or it’s so you say “That’s nice”, approve it and very very soon the spammers will unleash their bots.
    If you have any suspicions, mark it as spam and kill it.

    Has anybody figured out how/why this is happening? I do have to say that the moderation queue saved me on this one if they ARE going to release the bots. ??

    Are there any means of removing this? I keep getting people commenting on my blog that I spam commented their site when I’ve never heard of them before. All the plugins I’ve looked at stops spam from getting into my blog, but how about something that keeps someone from using my URL for spam?

    How could such a plugin possibly work though? There is just no way to stop people adding a link to your site wherever they please.

    Point taken. I’m curious for those who have had the same problem, what their solution is. It’s annoying enough to get spam comments, but to have other blogs have spam comments pointing back at my blog… sigh.

    I’m one of the affected people as well. This thing is growing and growing. You can go ahead and mark it as spam and even add the URL’s of those who are affected to spam blacklists but: YOU can be next…

    This thing marks the end of centralized url blacklists… mark my words.

    Two articles of my blog are full with this comments spam..
    both articles are trackbacks to english language blogs.
    with the 10 last owner of the blogs in the links in this spam comments I have email contact and they don’t know what to do, because they haven’t send this.

    Yes, may be tomorrow “my” link is in some of this spam comments and I don’t know why .. ??

    This might very well happen. I’ve already sensed some sort of pattern in blogs being spammed first but spamvertised in consequent spam runs later on. I found the first occurrence of spam with my weblog url in it on a topic on https://www.matrixsynth.com. A week or so later I spotted the first spam linking to THAT topic on matrixsynth.

    Be prepared…

    consider this, someone comments and uses a link that isnt spammy. You approve it.

    Later, spammer goes to not-spammy site, and leaves spammy comment.

    Spammer has just manipulated (so they hope) google page rank, and started a chain of links that eventually end up at spammy site.

    thats why it happens.

    Especially if the spammer can find a legit site that the owner is not taking care of. A LOT of people put up blogs, and go on vacation, or get a new job, etc.. hence ignoring said blog long enough for spammers to lay their roots down.
