• I believe the newest update was incompatible with my previous settings.

When I looked at the page last night, it was reduced to just the menu links and a search box with none of the formatting.

I called my host (BlueHost) and they tried to resolve the issues having to do with cacheing. They got it back to showing just the blog, with none of the other graphics or formatting, and then the current version which has some of the formatting, but some is missing or changed, and the blog area is replaced by a section on how “Easily Customizeable” the theme is.

We tried to restore the page to the saved version from before the update, but it auto updated immediately and replaced the restore. I’m trying a restore again, hoping I can make sure to switch the auto-update toggle if it resets, but I’m not too hopeful. Even for the three minutes it was restored before a bunch of settings were messed up.

Is there any suggestion for how to just get the site back to the way it looked a week ago?

  • First of all you have to disable automatic updates: https://prntscr.com/kaivzb

Then, let me say, you can put the site back, but you will need to go through the process sooner or later. This update changes the format of the theme…it does away with the redux framework, so some settings you will need to go through again, and if you have a child theme, you may need to “reconnect” the parent theme to the child theme. There are other threads going on, I recommend you read some of them. We have all dealt with it, and gotten through it, and you can also. Romik will help you. You just have to be a little patient as he is helping many people right now. But it’s not as bad as it seems at first.

My site is fried as well after applying the update. Here is the message on my website:

    Call to undefined function evolve_theme_mod()

Hosting service was not able to restore the website with its backup. Right now, trying to restore from a BackWPup backup but not having any luck.

do you have a child theme?

BackWPup is the worst backup restore program in my opinion, it never worked for me. I use WP Migrate (or phpmyadmin) for database backups, and straight FTP for file backups. You can try to install WP Rollback to see if it will roll back, sometimes that works even if it wasn’t in when you updated. But again, you guys are going to have to do this sooner or later.

Never depend on host for your backups. It’s not really their responsibility. Always get database backup (a good one) before theme or core updates.

    Hi Donna,
I turned off auto updates of the theme in the dashboard. Do I need to do it in the config file as well?

If it still updated as soon as you restored, possibly, yes. Try the theme disable one.

But why not put the issues with the update, and let Romik and others try to help you first? It’s a major change, this update, and it IS for the better, you just have to get past it. It dumps the additional redux framework that was necessary, so it is better.

But if you need to wait for a more opportune time, I get it. I rolled mine back for one day, because it was too late in the day the first time I did and my site crashed

    No child themes.

I’m just a one man small business and not at all a techie aside from some very basic stuff old school web stuff. I think I may just have to rebuild the site just in simple html and css to keep my job more simple even if it means ditching the WP part.

I’d love to wait for help, but I need to send clients to my site to see my work. It’s part of my workflow in bidding for performance gigs. I’m already missing potential gigs right now because I don’t have an intact site.

    UPDATE:

I’ve been through all the restore options my host could suggest and nothing worked.

I’m contemplating going through the new version manually and fixing it so at least the site is cleaner and navigable with no obvious weirdness, but I’m afraid that will take hours, it was very customized to start with.

A little afraid that I’ll start the process and the next update will fry it again.

So you have no choice now, the heavens have spoken. Not likely. This update is unique. Later ones will likely be fine.

tell romik what your issues are so we can fix them

Actually, there is a long history with the evolve theme of updates causing display problems on sites. I think other developers would have been more likely to retire an old theme and put out a new one with a change to a different framework. But of course that would have its own set of problems.

My main point is that I learned long ago to NEVER auto-update themes, particularly evolve – or any other theme where substantial customizations have been made, even to a child them. Any update to a theme has the potential of messing up settings — so best to do the update manually when there is time to check and confirm that all is working properly.

But best practice for a major theme update is to run it through a development site first, if possible; and if that is not an option to first backup, then apply the change, and choose to complete the update when there is time available to troubleshoot and repair.

I haven’t tried it, but this plugin might be a good option as a way to get better control over the update process.

I agree with Abigail. I have maintenance contracts and maintain many sites, and I never do themes or core, without multiple ways to restore them. And I’m glad he didn’t dump the theme, because there’s nothing worse that starting from scratch, in my opinion. But then again, I also didn’t know it was built on the framework when I got it. I try to stay away from frameworks for my clients unless they specifically ask for it.

I saw that plugin recommendation somewhere else also, supposed to be good. But why get a plugin when 1 line of code will do it? That’s my opinion.

Patience please, I am doing some last tests and fixes ??
