• Hello,

I have a blog running with /year/month/date/post type URL structure. How I see there is an option which allows me to change the URL Structure to a different type of setup (which I wish to have now)

But the question I have is, I already have around 88 posts and 3 pages. I dont wish to change their URL structure (for back links) so is there anyway by which I can configure WordPress to use new URL structure from new posts only ??

    Thanks.

  • Hi Choto,

I would recommend keeping your URL scheme consistent across your site – so if you change it, then you should update your old posts too (of course, WordPress does this automatically).

For back links, I would recommend looking into a plugin like Redirection (https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/redirection/) which will turn your 404’s into 301 redirects. ??

    Thanks a lot for replying..

If you can, I would be helpful to know as why do you want me to keep the current URL scheme and if I change, then why do you want me to change old URLs too ??

As personally I am looking to make sure just the newer posts to be with new URL scheme !! Is not there any way for this ??

Consistancy. It may not seem like a huge dela, but you should always do everything that you can to make it easier for your users. That includes keeping your URl structure the same on everything so that users don’t get confused. Uses can get confused way to easily (I know that from experience) and something that seems as trivial as changing your URl structure can cause users to get confused, and any confusion on your site means that users trust it less and are more likely to move onto another site that doesn’t confuse them.

And no, out of the box, WordPress doesn’t have an option for some URL’s to be different like that. It’s all or none. There migth be a plugin for it out there somewhere but yours is a very unsual request so it may be hard to find even if it does exist.

AFAIK, you can only change your url scheme site wide – this includes all previous posts. You would have to redirect all your old links if you don’t want them to return a 404.

Thanks a lot for both you to take your time off to reply my post.. Appreciated..

So it seems WordPress doesn’t support this. But isn’t it suppose to be for users, I meant since SEO wise two different URL scheme wont be any negative then if as a webmaster, I require this, WordPress should have supported it..

My website already has a redirection and the main domain it self a redirection. Now, I hear no many redirection is a big negative for SEO hence I would be looking to avoid any further redirection

if as a webmaster, I require this, WordPress should have supported it

Different people require all sorts of different things that you wouldn’t believe, so saying that WordPress should support it because it suits you really isn’t what I’d call a valid argument. I want WordPress to cook me dinner… but it won’t.

While there’s nothing wrong with what you want to do, it’s nowhere near common, so there’s no point adding it to the WordPress core for a very marginal edge case like yours. If that happened, it would open up the system to everyone else that wanted everything else and it would be come a bloated mess. If you really want to have it work this way it is possible to write a plugin that will do just this for you, but you’ll have to do a fair bit of research into the re-writing capabilities.
