I compared WPforo to Asgaros and Simple:press.
WPforo has an AWESOME importer tool, at least for Asgaros forums. I was able to import ~20 forums with over 400k posts without any problem. However, WPforo has basic functional issues that happened for me on every theme I tested it on (including the default 2023 WordPress theme):
1. The page containing the [wpforo] code only shows “ARCHIVE” when visited. When I made WPforo take over the entry to the site, the forums appeared, but seeing individual posts in the forum never worked.
2. After organizing Group order, trying to save the order resulted in a prompt to Leave the page or cancel. Either choice implies all data will be lost.
From a reliability/repeatability/training perspective, WPforo has too many options. I [seriously] doubt the developer is able to test every combination. It seems wonderful on the surface, but it’s overwhelming to someone that needs to troubleshoot a site. I encourage the developer to at least consider settings groups like Simple/Advanced/Expert, to let a new user have success with a thoroughly tested configuration that works in most conditions.
As for Asgaros and Simple:Press, Asgaros “just works” and has a low-options approach to settings. Simple:Press has the ugliest UI I have ever seen in WordPress, and their site was crashing when I tried to download their Importer.
#1 Asgaros
#2 WPforo
#3 Simple:Press
(I have reviewed most other forum packages, and for my needs, they fall below)
