• Hi

although familiar with building simple office Intranet sites with text, links and pics, this is my first serious attempt at a web site.

The problem I am having is twofold. My ID is by default the site administrator, however I want to add a colleague with the same authority. I have done this several times over the last three days, tested it, and the next day, the additional admin users are gone. Why, and how can I prevent this?

Also, although I live in German speaking Switzerland, I want the site in English. Again, I have changed that several times over the last few days, and the next day, it is back to German. How pan I prevent that?

    many thanks
    Kerry

Further to this, it has just happened again. At circa 12:00 my time I changed the language to english, and added two admin users. I spent two hours adding a theme and various pages, saving/publishing everything.
At 13:56 I get a mail in German that wordpress has been updated, and now everything i did is gone

Same again this week. Does anyone know what is going on here?

Is it only the users that are gone or is there some other data removed too?

I cannot sign in at all, using the original, or two of the other admin ids i set up. I have attempted password resets for the existing id but still can not sign in. The others appear to be gone.
The home page is back to being a blog with a single hello world post. None of the pages we created are there.

I am reading on another thread that we should use a child template. But surely the question here should be, why is a standard update of wordpress also affecting editable templates. The implication being, we cannot use certain templates, which defeats the point of choosing them

I am reading on another thread that we should use a child template.

That may not apply to your problem. When you download a theme from the WordPress and modifies it and the theme is updated in the WordPress repository that will overwrite your changes. Separating your theme changes into a child theme protects your work.

Your problem appears to be different. First thing:

I cannot sign in at all, using the original, or two of the other admin ids i set up. I have attempted password resets for the existing id but still can not sign in. The others appear to be gone.

You cannot log into your own installation of WordPress. Is that still the case?

At 13:56 I get a mail in German that wordpress has been updated, and now everything i did is gone

What did you change and where exactly? Which files if any did you modify? I am asking so that it can be clear what happened and why.

I added a nuber of pages including text and images which are gone.

My language is defaulting to german because i live in switzerland.I switch to englich and that is changed.
Also the additional admin users clearly no longer exist
I cant see how a software update towordpress shoud delete my pages, of language settings

no, i cannot log in, even after resetting the password

Software updates will never effect your content (pages) or settings. I think your DB is getting rolled back by something. Is there a job that is resetting or restoring your database?

no, i cannot log in, even after resetting the password

Try using one of these alternate methods for resetting your password and see if that takes.

    https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Resetting_Your_Password

    This one is usually good.

we backed up the db via the hosting service . there is no process to restore.

we have three environments. Hosting service admin, web design, and db, each with its own id/password. If I change the php password,it will only change that environment. I have already reset the wordpress ID, but cannot sign in

Let me see if this clarifies things.

    1. I use hoststart.ch for my hosting service where I have an admin id and password.
    2. Ultimately we chose WordPress for the web design, which is a seperate environment, with a unique id and password, albeit linked to my hosting service for storage purposes.
    3. Within both Hoststar and WordPress we are able to define/create a MYPHP environment and access to mySQL. This is a third unique environment.

Access to 1, and 3 is OK
Checking our site, it is back to being a simple blog, all changes are gone, no additional pages, images, template/theme, or anything.
Having attempted to reset the password for the ID I sign in with, it now seems to be blocked.

Firstly, how can I get logged back in.

Secondly, and I know you will bounce back with “use a child template”, but when the system is updated, why on earth not simply update the native template, and not the ones people have used and customiesed? There is no warning that this is likely to happen, and it makes much more sense to me than having to have the same question coming up time and time again and wasting everyones time

    Thread Starter Kerryh_r

    (@kerryh_r)

Access to our DB is still active via php, but we can not log in at wordpress with the user defined in the wp_user table.

I have attempted a password reset via the lost password option, it generates an email,I change the password, and I still can not log in.
I tried https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Resetting_Your_Password#Through_phpMyAdmin also without success. Yes, I used the MD5 option

If we can not get into our site, we can not begin to look into a child template scenario, and move on. At this rate, i will drop wp and switch to joomla.

It’s a bit late, but have you considered just re-installing from scratch?

Here’s the problem I have with this topic: I’m not sure what you are doing, what you want to do as well as how you are doing it.

Back to basics: can you log into your WordPress installation via https://your-url-here/wp-admin/ That URL should redirect you to the login page.

Doe that by itself work for you now?

    Thread Starter Kerryh_r

    (@kerryh_r)

In my previous note I explained we can NOT log in to WordPress ../wp-admin at all.
The lost password option is sending us a mail, we go to the link, create a new password, and it does not work

We tried to change it via the solution in the phpMyadmin link above, that also does not work.

    Is that clear enough now??
