    Hi – I am a complete novice!

    DIY or professional?

I have a brief ready to hand over to a pro for a new e-commerce site. However, so many people have said “why don’t you build a wordpress site yourself and use an ecommerce plugin?”. It sounds simple, but is it?

I want the site to look nice, clean and simple with good nav and usability. Is this something I can do with no experience or is it best to pay for a professional site?

    Thanks,
    Jamie A.

If you’ve NEVER made a website before, it’s a good idea to hire someone. They may use WordPress, or may not, but learning all this on your own takes time that you may or may not have.

Thank you for the advice. No I have never made a website! It’s the first of a few sites I’m planning, so I may seek the help of a pro and then spend time learning so I can do the next site myself.

    Thank you,
    Jamie.

If you’re planning on several sites, as you pay for the first one to be done, install WP and try the DIY method on one of your other sites.

If you want to learn, then DIY. But don’t expect yourself to produce a professional looking and custom-tailored site. (Ecommerce plugins are templates and may not always work exactly like you would like.)

There’s a couple of (maybe more) years of learning ahead of you before you’re able to make a truly professional looking ecommerce site yourself.

On the other hand, if you want to launch a business now, then definitely hire a professional (a good and expensive one). And don’t haggle over rates.
