Please tell me what you think of my new design. Tell me if anyone has anything like it. I tried to make something original, so hopefully its a first.

Just look at the front page (I’m not completely done with the other pages). BTW, the numbers are the navigation. The search bar and the links, I would love to style better to fix the style of the rest of the page, if anyone has a guide to make a search bar with rounded edges, please share.

Also the content is QUITE old, god I need to think of something interesting to post.

  • Well, if the thing on your mind is ‘how do I make this design as clean as possible?’, as opposed to ‘how do I make this design as easy to use for my visitors as possible?’, well, er… lemme see… Why don’t you try removing the navigation altogether, then? You never know, it might distract your users. ??

I believe there’s a javascript you can download somewhere from the internet to make rounded CSS borders. It should do the trick for your search box.

Well, if by “easy to use” you mean accessibility, my page is more “easy to use” than yours.

Just wanted to let Lorelle know that my site is now both XHTML and CSS compliant.

Easy to use is as in how hard it is to find information. Making your site easier to use is just two simple steps away, really:

    – Show the ‘Home’ and ‘About’ links in full text all the time
    – Assume the 3 last bottons are clicked all the time

As much as I dismiss Vincent Flanders as irrelevant, has a very good case against the kind of navigation that you are using.

I really don’t think he has much place to criticise anyone for “sucky design”. If his design doesn’t deserve to be labeled a “sucky design” I don’t know whose does.

Just because a site is accessable doesn’t mean that it has good design, infact most of the time its the opposite.

Dude, unless I am mistaking, you asked for constructive criticism. Constructive criticism you get. As much as I find your site pretty, I find it lacking in usability. There’s no need to be aggressive or defensive or anything; just take the critic and ask youself what could be done about it. Or conclude that your site is awesome and move along.

Ok Denis, I changed the navigation. Please tell me if that works.

It’s certainly better, yes. I’d make it a lot darker, though, and I’d remove the search nav button, and replace it with an always visible search box with a _button_. I insist on the button, because users have been conditionned to expect a Search or Go button.

Simple trick to test the usability of your web site: Ask three random friends to tell you if they would know — without thinking — what kind of information they will find and how they will find it.

Nice! I really liked your old design too.

    Which design was that?

Like the interactive nav, pretty spot on really. The simple clean layout is very appealing.
