I have a site + WP instillation running currently I want to convert to a WP only site

domain.com/blog is where wp resides I want to do a fresh install at domain.com. While I am building this new WP I would like my old site to function normally and then I can delete old site and old wp when done.

I found a link somewhere that said something about converting an index.php file to home.php and this would allow the old site to run until I switch to the new site.

Anyone have any tips on how to go about doing this?

  • If your hosting package allows it, I’d create a sub-domain and build it in there. Something like beta.domain.com. Once you’re finished you can migrate it to the main domain, and update the WordPress Address URL and the Site Address URL from the database.

indeed you could build your website via ftp through some offshoot of your domain name.
I would personally build the website on my local computer before posting it.
simply download “WAMP” (Windows) or “MAMP” (Mac) and build the website through localhost first, make sure its how you want it and stable, THEN upload it.
this way saves a lot of time as ftp over slow connections is a hassle.
