• I just did what appeared to be a clean install of MAMP 5.1, set it up according to the instructions here, downloaded WordPress, moved everything to the folder I specified as “root” in MAMP, and I get a Not Found message before I can even begin the WordPress install. I’m sure I’m doing something simple and stupid, but I certainly can’t figure it out! Help?

I’m returning to WordPress after learning about it a couple of years ago. I had developed some practice pages back then and successfully played with it for several months using a previous version of MAMP. For this go-around I first tried updating MAMP and that caused the Not Found problem, so I tried going back to ground zero: trashed the old MAMP folder, moved all the old Worddpress stuff far away, downloaded fresh copies of both MAMP and WordPress, and followed the instructions in the Codex to the letter. Nope: “The requested URL /wordpress/ was not found on this server” comes up before I can run the installation.

  • Silly question… IS MAMP running? Is your WordPress install in a folder named WordPress or just installed in the root folder?

MAMPS default root folder is htdocs.

Your URL to MAMP is https://localhost:8080/

Yes, MAMP is running. The complete path to the wordpress folder is /Users/WEWilliams/Sites/wordpress. And at least the way I installed it, I think the MAMP URL is https://localhost:8888 rather thanm 8080. I tried setting up a second wordpress install in htdocs in the MAMP folder (and, of course, changing MAMP’s settings to point there), and that, too, resulted in a not found.

Thanks much for your reply! At my level, there’s no such thing as a silly question.

Did you create the database with phpMyAdmin and enter the details in config.php?

Yes, and I seem to have solved the problem. I think I just didn’t have the correct degree of nesting: the folder I point MAMP to has to contain a folder that in turn contains the WordPress site, evidently. I had pointed MAMP at the folder containing the files of the site, not a folder containing those files. Adding that second folder made all go smoothly. As I said, I was sure it was something elementary, and it was, but bit hard to diagnose!

Thanks very much for the replies.
