• Hey! So, I am relatively new to WordPress, and have a question which I think involves multisite. I am in the process of setting up and running a consulting firm (MT3consulting.com). I was wondering if it is possible/desirable to run multiple wordpress sites with different domain names (as in example1.com, example2.com, example3.com) from the same host (bluehost). Furthermore, if that’s possible, would I have to purchase domains from the same host that the site is hosted from or could they be from multiple sites (ie. 1 from godaddy, 1 from bluehost, etc.). Thanks very much!

  • Doesn’t matter where the domains are registered. At each registrar, point the name-servers to Bluehost.

    But check with Bluehost first to be sure you can run true multisite with domain mapping, rather than subfolders or subdomains. They have some restrictions in their shared hosting plans. They do not officially support the wildcard subdomains needed for the subdomain format.

    Read through the multisite forum here for more info on Bluehost and Multisite, and check Bluehost’s help docs.

    Thanks! I’ll check that out.

    Bluehost does support the wildcard subdomain. I run two networks with different domains hosted with them. Just add a * subdomain on the domain you want to run with multisite, pointing to the same directory than you domain. Like this:

    mydomain.com -> /public_html

    *.domain.com -> /public_html (not at the wildcard subdirectory)

    Be patient since from US the changes to bluehost DNS’ are almost instantaneous, not from every place in the world however.

    Thank you! Do you know if InFocus hosting supports wildcard domains?

    I don’t know, I’m sorry.
