Hi, I’m new to WordPress and a fellow developer advised me to only use twenty twelve or themes like that, as my parent theme, for forward compatibility. In other words, because it’s a default theme, it would be well-supported for a long time to come, so a robust base for developing commercial sites for clients.

However, when I came across Expound I really thought it looked like a great theme to use. Can someone please comment on the approach of using twenty twelve vs. Expound or other themes as a parent theme, in developing sites for clients, in terms of future support, and WP updates, in which robustness of the template is a primary concern?

More generally, how does one go about selecting parent themes to use? Is it really best to just go with a recent default, official WP theme?

    Thanks so much.

Good support is not maintained by the theme’s author, but by the community. Looking at the first page of support threads created for Expound it seems support is quite good. The community are interested in the theme and want to make it better by helping out. That’s a good sign.

Twenty Twelve has been out for a long time and everyone who downloaded WordPress since ’12 has a copy of it, so Twenty Twelve will always win the comparison.

There are never any guarantees about a theme, but from what I have seen on these forums, Expound is an excellent theme, well-supported and the developer happens to work for Automattic (they run WordPress.COM) – so I’d guess he’s likely to stick around and keep his themes updated.

Thanks for the kind words Karis, glad you like the theme. You shouldn’t have any problems using Expound as your parent theme, the changes we make from version to version are (supposed to be) 100% backwards compatible, meaning your child themes should not break. Of course we all make mistakes sometimes, so you never know ??

In any case, even if at some point you’re completely unsatisfied with an update shipped to Expound, you can easily fork it and roll your own – that’s the freedom the GPL license gives you. The same applies to all the themes hosted in the www.ads-software.com directory.

    Cheers!
