• I’m interested in making a news portal in which I would like to have multiple authors, every user that would want to contribute with something could write.

Is it possible to have that kind of wordpress site. I would not want admin authorisation, since it drives people off…so, multiple author access, and possibly the options to write in given categories (something like sports, media, weather etc.)

    thanks

  • Yes.

However, you’d do well to authorize. Just letting *anyone* have free access to write could lead to some Very Bad Things. The only people authorization “drives off” are the kinds of people you *want* to drive off.

I know the Role Manager Plugin will let you do some cool stuff, but there’s another plugin out there that will let you moderate contributor’s articles in much the same way you do comments. You can set it so that the posts are not published and you are notified so you can go look before allowing it to go through. You really need to be notified when someone writes an article so you can go and be sure it’s okay – and moderate what their status is so they don’t gain access to anything nasty.

I’d be worried about the uploads function as well – it would only take one jerk to come along and upload a nice, fat virus to your server and compromise everyone on it.

    Great reply! Thanks!

So, heading forward, I need role manager plugin? Or is the other one you talkin about better…

Off to find some apropriate themes for my type of web…any ideas where to find “news portal” or similar looking theme?

Role Manager would be a good plugin to start with, I think. But you might Google on other “role manager” plugins – I think if you search on these forums for “moderate authors” you’ll find info on moderating author contributions so you can check them before posting.

As for theme – you can try the themes.wordpress.net. I can’t suggest any – I’m a dweeb who always codes her own – I don’t really use premade ones.

Theres a site called ODude.com which gives us option to display news with pictures of our choice in any topic.

There is javascript and php code to choose from.
Most imporatnt is that its free to use and we can dispaly any news as many we want.
