“News” Style Content from Post

I’ve searched from what I’m looking for, but can’t seem to find exactly what I want. I’m sure this is probably super easy to do, but everything I’ve tried doesn’t quite come out right. I’m redesigning a site for a non-profit. They have lots of events and “news” like type information on their site. Their site is about 90% static pages and then they use posts for their news and updates. What I currently have is a carousel that has the last so many posts that are in the “news” category. That part works great. What I’d also like is to have a sort of “featured story” type area on the front page, probably right above the carousel of other news, that looks similar to a news story. I’ve found a few plugins that will let me show recent posts, but none that displays the post like a news article. Most of them just do a short blurb and then a “read more”. I want more text and preferably the ability to also show the featured image with the text wrapped around it.

Does this make sense what I’m looking for? All my searches are coming up short and I’m not finding exactly what I want. Is there a plugin that would help me, or someway that I can manually do this?
