What is the error message or notice you are encountering? If you’ve downloaded the full themes repository then most likely you’ll run into an error. From our side we’ll correct the download link on our site.

In the meantime please click on this link to download the newspack-theme.zip file from the link below:

I have managed to download the zip successfully, however I cannot give the appearance of your demo (https://newspack.newspackstaging.com/)

I imagine that in order to remove your footer credits (Proudly powered by Newspack by Automattic) I will have to enter your pricing plan which is confusing the cost based on earnings

How does this work?

While we can only support issues related with the AMP plugin you could try a CSS approach for that notice. Something like the below added to your customizer might work (Appearance > Edit CSS)
.site-info-contain .imprint {display:none}
