It sounds like your theme styles may be overriding the plugin CSS. We would need to inspect things on your site to see what is needed to override your theme styles.

I was looking on my laptop. I checked on my phone and I can see the grey boxes like you said.

Can you try adding this to your custom CSS:

.tribe-events-sub-nav li a {
background: none!important;
}
