Next page link not working, 404 error

  • the next page link on the index.php page points to:
    <domain.com/wp-directory>/cgi-system/php.cgi?paged=2

    instead of the normal:
    <domain.com/wp-directory>/index.php?paged=2

    this is with the default theme.

    i’ve looked through the WP php files but can’t work out where WP pulls in the information to make the link.

    any ideas?
