NextGEN does not create gallery folders if folder name has been used before
-
[Newest WP version, newest NG version, twenty-eleven theme]
Hi NextGEN support,
an old, severe problem is back again.
Introduction
NextGEN knows two ways of creating a new gallery.
A) The “two-in-one” way
Using the “add gallery / pictures” function to create a new gallery and upload pictures into it at the same time.B) The “long way”
Use “manage galleries” -> “add new gallery” to create the empty gallery. Then upload pictures via “add gallery / pictures” in a second step. The problem I had a few years ago
A few years ago, the plugin just did not create galleries anymore if their names had already been used before. Normally it had never been a problem for NextGEN. If you had a gallery “example” and created other galleries “example”, the plugin created the folders on the FTP-server like this:
example
example-1
example-2
example-3It functioned very well. As part of an album, the “example-1” or “-2” or “-3” gallery would just have the title “example”. Just like it was supposed to be.
So a few years ago the plugin just DID NOT create the -1, -2 and so on gallery anymore. If I wanted to create a second gallery with the same name, it just did not do it.
I posted the problem in this forum back then. There was no really solution, but I found out that the problem ocurred only when using the “two-in-one” way (see Introduction point A). So a few years ago I just started to create my galleries with the “long way” (see Introduction point B) to bypass the problem.
So what is new now??
Since the latest NextGEN update, the problem ocurres both with method A and method B of creating new galleries. I can not bypass the problem anymore by going “the long way” (B), because now creating galleries with already existing names does just not work on BOTH ways of creating a gallery anymore.
The only way to bypass it now is very long, complicated and error-prone.
1.
Log into FTP server and check how many galleries with the name you need. If you have already “example-4” you know you need the folder “example-5”
2.
create a gallery with a unique name like “XXXXXXXX”
3.
Edit this gallery in the “manage galleries” section. Manually set the gallery title from “XXXXXXXX” to “example” and the gallery path to “wp-content/gallery/example-5/”
4.
Manually delete the empty “XXXXXXXX” folder you don’t need from the FTP serverYou see that this kind of bypass is very complicated. So this time a true solution for the problem would be appreciated. Our website is a music magazine. We publish galleries of the same bands often so we often need the same gallery names again.
The complicated bypass I have to do now multiplies the time we need to publish galleries. If it stays this way it would be catastrophic for us :-/
