Nextgen gallery still jumping to top of page

Here’s the problem — again:

I have a page with a Nextgen gallery, using Nextgen basic thumbnails (but the result is the same with Nextgen basic slideshow). If the viewer clicks on “Show thumbnails” or “Show slideshow”, the page jumps to the top and you have to scroll all the way down again to see the slideshow or thumbnails. If the page is long, this is not acceptable.

If I search for “nextgen+gallery+jumps+top” I get about 130 hits for this problem. I only have time to read the first 10 or so, but it appears that the Nextgen people don’t pay any attention.

The only solutions seem to involve modifying code. This is unacceptable on moral grounds (the product should work correctly) and practical ones (you need to reinstall the mod every time you update nextgen).

If there is no good solution, could someone recommend me another slideshow/thumbnail module — one which works in an acceptable manner.
