• I upgraded NextGEN Gallery from version 2.0.33 to 2.0.40 and my website broke. I couldn’t even use the administrator’s page, with error 500.
I reverted to version 2.0.33 and the problems were fixed.
I am using a child version of Twenty Ten and I have the following plug ins activated: Akismet, MapPress Easy Google Maps, Recently Updated Pages, WordPress Importer. Really, this is a pretty simple website at stainsbyte[dot]com
Conflicts with MapPress Easy Google Maps and NextGEN Gallery by Photocrati have occurred in the past, but not to such devastating consequences.
Can you provide an answer to why my website broke and how can I avoid this in the future?

  • It’s not likely a conflict with MapPress Easy Google Maps. I just activated that plugin along with NGG 2.0.40 just fine.

Standard debugging practice involves 1) checking activated plugins for conflicts 2) checking your current theme for conflicts and 3) checking your configuration/setup.

A 500 error is an HTTP error, so you should start by looking in your server error logs (or have your host check those for you). That will likely point you to the cause of the error.

My images take AGES to show up… I think we always go YEARS back when updating NextGen…

My test website was working fine this morning then I updated to 2.0.40 and now the gallery is broken with the [Not a valid template] error. I have not changed anything else. Don’t even know what template it’s looking for. It broke on the [nggallery id=xx] shortcode. The album compact took forever to load and clicking on an gallery also gets the [Not a valid template] error.
I followed the fallback instructions to 2.0.33 but the error did not go away. I thought that maybe a new file was added and replacing the files from 2.0.33 did not resolve the problem. So I deleted all the files and moved the 2.0.33 files into the right folder and tried again. Still broken! That means the new version changed something in the settings and replacing the files does not fix whatever changed. I now have a test system that has no pictures. I was suppose to demo our new website this weekend now my galleries and albums are hopelessly broken.
