I don’t know how NG processes thumbs for display using the NextGEN Widget but it looks like they are resized more than once as the result is very unsharp.
I have set the default thumb size for galleries in NextGEN itself at 130×90, single pic at 250×100.
The widget thumbs are set to 200×150.

Having tried another similar widget whilst this one has its troubles I notice that the thumbnail is beautifully crisp. However the full size image will not display the title so I prefer the NextGEN widget which does.

There are quite a few references to blurry thumbs on the forum but very little in the way of solutions that don’t involve php hacks.

Is there any way of setting sizes so that they are crisp?
is there anything you could do to address the issue if not?

@digbymaass – Are you using the “original images” versus “thumbnails” in the NextGEN Widget options? and, does your theme do anything to images in your widget areas?

In most cases this has ultimately been theme related when the thumbnails are blurry but without an example URL I cannot offer more than the above at the moment.

    Thanks!

This is the site and the sidebar item ‘Photo Pick’ is the widget. https://carnethy.com/

    The widget settings are:
    Show: 1 Thumbnails
    Random
    Enable IE8 Web Slices
    Custom 200×150
    Only which are listed
    Gallery ID: 35

The setting for thumbnails in NextGEN itself is 130×90
The theme is eleven40 Pro Theme on Genesis. I don’t *think* the theme plays any part in the display. There aren’t any other Plugins that affect image display.
I assume the widget is picking up the 130×90 thumbnails in the selected gallery and enlarging them, so making them unsharp. I have never set ‘original image’ as I assumed that would put in the full sized image.

    Thanks!

I just tried ‘original image’ instead of thumbnail. And guess what. It’s nice and sharp!
In my defence I would say that the documentation could be much clearer! It’s not intuitive that that should be the setting. I think all settings should have unambiguous concise explanation of the effect or an instruction where it isn’t obvious. All the other settings on the widget are pretty self explanatory save that one.

Possibly something like “Use ‘Original Image’ if setting a custom size”?
It’s hard not to associate ‘original image’ with original size. Not sure what the best wording might be.

As a matter of curiosity, when/why would you want it to use the thumbnail rather than the original image?

@digbymaass – Thanks for the update … and to be honest, I am not certain of very many use cases where the “thumbnail” would be used unless it is also the default size that is acceptable. This would also be a hold-over option from NextGEN Legacy as well.

You have made some very interesting observations others may be interested in seeing as well.
