I started getting 504 Gateway Timeout errors on my site a couple of days ago. I am getting more and more of those errors to the point that my site is barely accessible anymore. Once in a while I can access a page.

I’ve noticed weird things like all my plug-ins were deactivated. The home page and site url in my settings were also set wrong (they were missing the S in https and missing the www which I remember putting there), creating multiple redirects. That’s now been fixed, but still the site won’t work.

Any idea what could have triggered those changes? Was I hacked?

Any idea how to resolve the 504 Gateway Timeout errors?

    Thank you.

Have you been contacted by the support/abuse staff with your web hosting provider about any issues recently? They may have made some changes to your installation if it was causing high load on the server, for example. However, any respectable web host would have informed you of such changes. You should definitely look into contacting them about this – even if they have nothing to do with this, they will be able to tell you when the plugins were disabled, and by whom.

Strong possibiity this is not caused by WordPress. As korikori said, check with your hosting provider.

    Thank you for your help!

I have contacted the hosting company 3 times, they weren’t really helpful but now I have a ticket with an admin and am patiently waiting.

Still I can’t explain that my WordPress settings would have been changed.

The hosting company ended up realizing the issue was on their hand. They cited “server performance issues” that they resolved, and my site is back up and running at full speed today. Pffffeeeew.

    Thanks for your help.

Glad that you managed to resolve the issue.
