I recently found out that my website was hacked. I have been unable to login to the WordPress dashboard since then. It doesn’t even show up. It redirects and crashes, showing only a white screen.

I recently found a folder in the wp-content folder that is named mu-plugin. When I click on the file contained in the folder and try to delete it, it says I don’t have permission to perform that function. I also can’t edit, rename, or otherwise change the folder or file. When I read the file in the editor, it was clear that this file was uploaded from the person who hacked the site and it is a direction to crash the login page whenever login is called for.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

  • Hi, first let’s try renaming your plugins directory to something like _plugins which will force disable all plugins. Next, I would contact your host about the file you’re unable to delete and ask them for some assistance.

Also, it seems like you may need to re-upload WordPress core files. I would start by creating a new directory called “quarantine” to put all of your files in (except wp-config.php and wp-content). After, you will need to download and unzip WordPress so that you can upload the new files to your web server. Make sure to exclude the wp-config-sample.php and wp-content files.

Since you said your site has been compromised get a nice glass of your favorite beverage and follow this guide to recover from the hack.

You may need to reset your password in the database using phpMyAdmin to get back into your wp-admin. If so, follow this guide to do that.

    Hope this helps!

This is what it looks like when I try to access your admin area.

Check with your web service provider that they are not employing the anti-bot script installed at the server level that is automatically applied to every WordPress installation on a given webserver.
